He first visited in the 1970s with the Jackson 5, but it was his solo tours that truly cemented the bond. During his Bad World Tour in 1987, he played 14 sold-out shows in Japan, an unprecedented feat at the time.

Fans lined the streets just to catch a glimpse of him. He returned in the 1990s for his Dangerous and History tours, again selling out stadiums across Tokyo, Yokohama, and Fukuoka. Michael often became tearful when met with emotional displays from cheering Japanese crowds. He knew their love was different. It was unconditional.

It’s for what movie, sir? [singing] Even in 2006, long after his final tour, Michael made a special trip to Tokyo just to meet fans. No concert, no press, just a heartfelt fan appreciation event where he shook hands, gave hugs, and shared moments with those who supported him for decades.

The city of Tokyo essentially shut down for the premiere with building-size displays across Shinjuku and an immersive exhibition drawing thousands before the film even opened.
