Irving and Joyce Wolf have assembled a rich collection of American art, design, and craftsmanship throughout 66 years of their marriage.
The couple also owned a vast array of 20th century jewelry. Today, we’ll examine their most astounding pieces. This will be an unusual review. Both perfectionists, the Wolves, opted for the pieces with a relatively grand sense of scale. Only a few American houses made jewels like that.
Prepare to see the signed pieces from top American jewelers and discover the strict design parameters of the wolf’s family. Stay until the end to see Joyce’s favorite jewel. It is really outstanding. [music] The core of it collection. The famous family has gained millions with their Wolfland company, now Inexco oil company, and they knew how to spend them chic.
Wolves had three children, and their son Matthew admitted his parents had incredible collecting jeans. When they saw something of beauty, they respected it and often purchased it. Nine mystery set jewels by Van Clee and Apples were the heart of their collection. All of them had one thing in common, the so-called mystery setting, which the French brand patented in 1933.
This exquisite technique makes one think no metal is holding the gems, blanketing the jewel surface. Each gem is specially cut to fit the design and carefully grooved on the sides to slide on the hidden tracks in the setting. Let’s see how it looks in practice. A mystery set ruby and diamond necklace estimated at around $400,000 is an opulent piece with a series of graduated scroll motifs and stunning rubies on a diamond ground.

A gorgeous pair of mystery set ruby and diamond ear clips boasts a Bombay design adorned with opulent rubies framed by round diamonds. Due to the unique maker’s technique and [music] precious gemstones, the piece was valued at $85,000. A mystery set ruby and diamond bracelet worth around $275,000 was made around 1988.
The amazing design features a highly flexible strap with five rows of rubies surrounded by round diamonds. A precious clasp is additionally set with baguette [music] diamonds. A mystery set ruby and diamond clip brooch is valued at $500,000. The pastile is set with a cluster of round diamonds framed by intricate ruby petals on a detachable diamond stem.
The family’s collection also had five stunning pieces using the same technique only with sapphires. Let’s see whether their price significantly differs from the ruby versions. A pair of mystery set sapphire and diamond ear clips of hoop design feature centering domed bands of magnificent sapphires framed by round diamonds.
The royalike piece was valued at $100,000. A mystery set sapphire and diamond bracelet is worth around $135,000. Its classic design features a flexible strap of opulent sapphires and the border [music] is decorated with round diamonds. The jewelry experts estimated the value of a pair of mystery set sapphire and diamond clip broches at $200,000.
[music] Each piece was designed as a leaf and decorated with top-notch sapphires within a border of striking diamonds with the diamond stem. A pair of mystery set sapphire and diamond ear clips boasts a lovely design of a mystery set sapphire flower head. Its centers and borders are adorned with round diamonds.
The last mystery set sapphire and diamond brooch valued at $250,000 is smaller than the ruby version. It’s adorned with round and pear-shaped diamonds while the petals are set with gorgeous sapphires. The detachable stem is decorated with high quality diamonds. You might think that the entire series comprises similar jewels, but the wolves weren’t fond of acquiring big gemstones alone.
They deliberately picked the highquality and beautiful gems in the jewels. The piece had to be outstanding for the Wolf family to add it to their jewelry box. The family paid great attention to the makers. So their jewelry collection comprised many Van Clee and Apples pieces crafted in New York [music] and several pieces from the French firm in the city of lights.
The next item by Van Clee and Apples, a sophisticated diamond double clip brooch costs around $100,000 but offers diverse styling. It was made in Paris in 1935. The design features a semic-ircular plaque set with old diamonds. One of the parts is detachable, [music] allowing Joyce to wear each piece separately or style them both in a lovely asymmetric way.
The creative design offers a vivid sense of movement. As you can see, the Wolf family owned no ordinary jewels. Their opulent jewelry collection resulted from a mutual hobby which the couple approached thoughtfully and with a sense of purpose. They mostly liked unique and iconic mid20th century designs. They also attended renowned galleries and boutiques for more intricate pieces.
Irving could simply invite his wife to Van Clee to see what they had. Iconic brands, unique jewelry. Harry Winston, Jar, and David Webb’s best creations were included in their magnificent collection. The first piece, a pair of Harry Winston [music] diamond cluster earrings, costs around $200,000 due to its opulent design and spectacular diamonds.
The second, a pair of aluminum, gold, and sapphire clip roaches by the American designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal, who lives in Paris, was also offered at the same price at Sod’s auction. It’s designed as a stylized flury with round sapphires. The third, a gold cuff bracelet by David Webb, is more modest at $125,000. This hinge cuff is made of fluted hammered gold and it looks really bold like all Web’s creations.
If you want to see more of them, visit our video dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection. She owned many striking pieces by David Webb as well. The renowned Italian and French brands Cartier and Renee Bua were among the Wolf’s favorites. Wait a bit and we’ll tell you about the most prominent piece Joyce loved the most.
Her gold hematite, cultured pearl, ruby, and diamond necklace by Bulgar was made in 1987. [music] Though the piece isn’t that antique, it was estimated at $40,000. The design features gold and fluted hematite links with 22 round cultured pearls. Round diamonds and ruby cababashon are the highlights of this opulent piece and it definitely attracted the couple’s attention when they were searching for the next treasure for their collection.
Their interest in jewelry sparked in the 1960s after the wolves moved from Cheyenne, Wyoming [music] to Denver, Colorado. They settled closer to the Navajo Indian Reservation and attended fairs. [music] Then the couple started to collect rugs and pottery, but they had a keen eye for jewelry.
When the family moved to New York City in 1971, they lived on Fifth Avenue close to Sabby’s auction house. After school, their son Matthew used to meet his mother there and do his homework right in the sales room. The wolves like to examine the offerings and purchase exceptional pieces of 20th century jewelry.
Matthew recalled his parents discussing beautiful jewelry items since his early childhood. Thus, you’ll find many 20th century pieces in Wolf’s jewelry collection, such as Cartier’s gold and onyx necklace worth around $17,000. It might seem simple, but it looks stunning on the neck. The bold piece comprises concave four-sided gold links and carved onyx rings.
This is not the only onyx jewel the Wolf family had chosen to fetch home. We’ll later tell you about the piece that reveals the essence of the design flare Irving and Joyce sought. The 35 karat diamond Renee Buava fish scale bracelet is another stunning piece they owned. It looks like dragon scales. The bracelet transforms into a magnificent openwork pattern when wrapped around the wrist.
Its nearly $100,000 price was a worthy investment for Irwin Wolf, who loved seeing his wife in the glittering pieces. Luckily, Joyce loved wearing top-notch jewelry. So, the jewels united the Wolf family similarly to art. It was a positive add-on to their relationship. Remember we highlighted that the Wolf family had a poncho for onyx jewels.
Their collection also included a spectacular platinum diamond and onyx clip brooch by the famous French jewelry brand Dussoy. This $25,000 piece wasn’t Joyce’s favorite, but it still stands out among other opulent pieces in her jewelry box. Dussoy was a small firm that made top-notch jewels in art deco style.
so loved by the couple. Paris, the hometown of the stunning brooch, was the center of the art deco movement, and jewelers living there, designed the period’s most imaginative pieces. The art deco jewelers, including Daoy, preferred symmetrical and balanced designs. They adhered to geometric shapes and a black and white trend.
The reason is that the ladies of the time liked the simple elegance of black and white to complement their evening dresses. The platinum diamond and onyx clip brooch is an excellent example of how stunningly an art deco jewel looks when it combines a simple geometric form and monochromatic color scheme.
It was made in 1925 and decorated with old European cut diamonds surrounded by segments of black onx. The base has a single old mine cut diamond [music] and a detachable pin carrier. It’s worth mentioning that Dasoy jewels are rare, so they are seldom spotted at auctions. This piece is a unique gem in the Wolf family jewelry collection.
Now, let’s see their longtime favorite, the piece Joyce loved the most. Joyce’s favorite piece. Irving and Joyce especially admired the creations of French by line designer Jean Schlumbberger at Tiffany. Joyce’s favorite was this adorable ruby and diamond strawberry brooch. The fruit brooch is an excellent example of highquality craftsmanship.
Round rubies look highly sculptural and give the strawberry its texture. Marqueeshaped diamonds in the long leaves naturally curl and twist. The designer made this fabulous brooch in 1960. He once explained, “I try to make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, at random, organic, in motion.
” The brooch was estimated at a hefty $40,000, but that didn’t stop the wolves from adding it to their shopping cart. Remarkably, the family didn’t purchase a piece of jewelry to memorialize some occasion. They used the same approach for collecting art items, simply acquiring special pieces when they found them.
This way, the Wolves managed to gain a spectacular compilation of jewels that will never go out of style. Which piece do you like the most? Do you share Joyce’s admiration of Schlumbberger’s ruby and diamond strawberry [music] brooch? Please share your thoughts with us.
