Richard Pryor was the second guest that night, and the building had been buzzing about it all week. Because everybody knew that when Richard Pryor sat down in that chair, anything could happen. But money does not reach the places that were hurt early. And Richard Pryor had been hurt very, very early.

He had grown up in his grandmother’s house in a world no child should have to learn to survive. The question was simple and it was devastating. He had written, “Does it ever stop hurting? Because if it doesn’t, I don’t think I can do this. Any of it.” And Richard Pryor, who got a thousand letters, had stopped on that one. Because Richard Pryor had asked that exact question at 3:00 in the morning into a telephone two years before.

And he knew what it had cost him to ask it. And he knew what it had meant that somebody on the other end had stayed on the line. So Richard had done something. He had quietly arranged through the show’s staff for that young man to be backstage tonight. Not in the audience. Backstage. Standing in that hallway.

The audience had gone past nervous and into something quieter and stranger, a held breath that would not release. Johnny Carson had not picked up his pen. He had not looked at his notes. He had been sitting with his hands folded on the desk watching that curtain and the people closest to the stage said afterward that they could see his jaw working, see him swallowing, see a man bracing himself for something. Ed McMahon leaned in one more time and said, very softly, “Johnny, it’s been 6 minutes.” And Johnny said, without turning his head, “I know exactly how long it’s been, Ed.” And then the curtain moved. And Johnny Carson stood up from his desk. Whatever happened next, nobody in that building was ready for it. And 40 years later, people who were in that room still cannot describe it without their voice changing. Richard walked the young man to the guest chair, the chair Richard himself had been sitting in.

He sat the boy down in it. And then Richard Pryor stayed standing, one hand still on the kid’s shoulder, and he looked at Johnny Carson across the desk and he said, “Johnny, I need to tell you something and I need to tell it on the air because if I tell it backstage, it’ll just be a thing that happened to me.

And it’s not just a thing that happened to me. It’s a thing you did. And you don’t even know you did it.” Johnny did not say a word. He sat back down, slowly, and he looked at Richard and the whole studio could see the host fall away from him. What was left was just a man. Two years ago, Richard said, “I called you in the middle of the night.

You remember?” And the camera caught it. The camera caught the exact moment that Johnny Carson remembered, the exact moment it came back to him not as a half-remembered kindness, but as the whole, full weight of that night. And his face changed, and he brought one hand up halfway to his mouth and stopped it there.

” Johnny Carson’s head went down. His hand pressed flat against his mouth. His shoulders were not still. “And here’s what I came on this show to tell you tonight,” Richard said. “You forgot. I know you forgot because you never said a word about it, not once in 2 years. You did the biggest thing anybody ever did for me, and it was so natural to you that you set it down and walked away from it.

But I didn’t set it down, Johnny. I have carried that night every single day. It is the floor I have been standing on for 2 years. And then Richard Pryor turned, and he looked down at the terrified boy in the chair, and his voice changed again, got lower, got steadier, became the voice of a man who had finally found the thing he came to say.

“This young man wrote me a letter,” Richard said. “He asked me a question. He asked me if it ever stops hurting. Because if it doesn’t, he doesn’t think he can keep going. And I walked off your stage tonight, Johnny, because I was going to go back there and answer him. And I got back there, and I looked at him, and I realized I couldn’t.

Because the answer that kept me alive, I didn’t make it. You did. And he needs to hear it from the man who said it.” The studio was utterly silent. 300 people. Not one sound. But I think maybe that’s the lesson, and I think maybe that’s what Richard walked off this stage to teach both of us.

You asked if it stops hurting.” Johnny leaned forward. “I’m not going to lie to a young man on national television. I don’t think it ever fully stops. I think you carry it. But here is what I have learned, and I have lived a while now, so I’m going to tell you like it’s true, because it is. The hurt doesn’t get smaller.

You get bigger around it. You build a life around it that is so wide and has so many people standing in it that the hurt becomes one room in a very large house. And some nights you’ll find yourself in that room. But you will not be able to stay there because somebody will need you in the kitchen. Somebody will be at the door.

The phone will ring. Johnny’s voice caught on the word phone, and he stopped. And he looked at Richard, and Richard looked back at him, and 20 million people watched two men say something to each other without saying anything at all. “The phone will ring.” Johnny said again, quietly. “And you’ll pick it up.

And that’s the whole job. That is the entire job, son. You just have to still be here when it rings.” The boy in the chair was crying. He was 19 years old, and he was crying in front of the whole country. And the strange and beautiful thing was that nobody in that studio felt embarrassed for him, because half of them were crying, too.

Ed McMahon had his hand over his eyes. Doc Severinsen had set his trumpet down on the floor. The camera operator who pushed in slowly on Johnny’s face later said he could not see the shot well because his own eyes had filled up. And Richard Pryor, the most dangerous comedian alive, the man who turned all of his pain into fire so that he would not be burned alive by it, stood between the two of them with one hand still on the boy’s shoulder and let the tears run down his face and did not reach for a single joke to stop them. But what Johnny Carson did next is the part of this story that almost nobody has ever heard. Johnny reached into the inside pocket of his jacket. And he took out a small, folded piece of note paper, soft and worn at the creases the way paper gets when it has been folded and unfolded many times. He held it for a a And then he said, “Richard, you said I forgot that night. And you’re mostly right. But I want to show you something.”

He unfolded the paper and he laid it flat on the desk so the camera could not read it, but Richard could. “The morning after you called me, Johnny said I couldn’t go back to sleep. So I sat down and I wrote one sentence on this because some part of me knew it mattered even if the rest of me was too busy to hold on to it.

I’ve kept it in this jacket and the jackets before this one for 2 years. I didn’t remember the night, Richard, but I never once stopped carrying the sentence.” Richard Pryor leaned forward and read the one line on the paper. And whatever it said, Richard closed his eyes. And then he reached across Johnny Carson’s desk and the two men held onto each other’s hands and neither one of them said anything and The Tonight Show, the loudest, funniest, brightest hour in America went completely silent and stayed that way for a long, long time. The show ran 19 minutes over its scheduled time that night. NBC switchboard lit up before the broadcast had even finished on the East Coast and stayed lit until morning. But the calls were not complaints. They were not even, mostly, about Richard Pryor or Johnny Carson. They were from people who had their own version of that 3:00 a.m. phone call. People who had made one.

He never told the press what was written on it. He never told his staff. When he retired from The Tonight Show in 1992, after 30 years, after thousands of broadcasts, a reporter asked him to name the single moment from all those years that he would keep if he could only keep one.

Everyone expected him to name a comedian, a president, a piece of history. Johnny was quiet for a moment. And then he said, “There was a night a friend of mine walked off this stage and I didn’t know where he was going. And I have never in my life been so glad I decided to wait.” When Johnny Carson passed away, his family went through his belongings.

Unfolded into the inside pocket of a jacket, soft and worn almost to cloth at the creases, they found a small piece of note paper. On it, in Johnny Carson’s own handwriting, dated to a winter morning in 1975, was a single sentence. It read, “He called. I stayed. Tomorrow he was still here. Don’t ever forget this is the only thing that ever mattered.

But somebody is keeping it. Somebody is folding it up and putting it in a pocket and carrying it every single day as the floor they are standing on.
