What To Know

  • Matt Wheeler, a singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania, expressed gratitude for his brief but meaningful experience on Jeopardy!
  • Wheeler highlighted the positive impact his appearance had on his autistic, minimally verbal son.
  • He praised the show’s supportive production team and host Ken Jennings.

Matt Wheeler’s time as a Jeopardy! champion might have been short-lived, but he will be forever grateful for the opportunity to compete on his favorite show of all-time.

The singer-songwriter from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, who works as an associate registrar at Lancaster Bible College, first appeared on the show last Thursday (June 11). He won the episode with $13,500 and returned to the Alex Trebek Stage on Friday (June 12), where he unfortunately finished in third place, ending his brief run on the show.

“It’s my favorite show by far,” Wheeler told LancasterOnline. “To have applied all these years and to get into the audition process and finally get the call in March that I’ll be on. It was surreal. I’m really very grateful.”

Wheeler also had high praise for the show’s production team, including host and former Jeopardy! super-champ Ken Jennings. “They were nothing but supportive and encouraging,” he said. “I can’t say enough good things about the whole experience of working with them.”

The highlight of his time on the show was how it inspired his 16-year-old son, Luke, whom he shares with his wife, Charity. Luke, who is autistic and minimally verbal, joined family and friends at a watch party for his dad’s Thursday episode.

“The best part was noticing that our son was watching him,” Charity told the outlet. “Our son is autistic and non-verbal, and he still recognized that his dad was on TV.”

Wheeler explained that he often uses music to connect with his son, with the pair taking turns finishing the lines of a song. He said getting to talk about Luke on the show was “pretty special,” adding, “I was really glad I had the opportunity to share it there on that national stage.”

“We’re an underrepresented group in the public eye,” Wheeler continued. “It’s really good to say to other people with special needs, and families who have loved ones who are neurodivergent, ‘Hey, I see you.’ I hope it resonates.”

As for whether Wheeler would return to Jeopardy! if he ever received the call, he made it abundantly clear. “Yes,” he stated. “I don’t know if that would happen, but I would come back in a heartbeat. This is an experience I’ll treasure, and I’m so grateful that it got to happen.”
