Ariana grande’s ‘eternal sunshine’ is her reputation era – Ty

Similar to how the public tried to destroy taylor swift in 2016 and then she came back with a record-breaking reputation album ariana grande is pulling insane numbers with eternal sunshine despite the public criticizing her insanely over the past year we’re going to get into all of that today in this episode of the main pot boys i’m adam the flop i’m patty pop culture and of course we are the main pop boys oo we’re so excited about this album because we have not been able to shut up about eternal sunshine and when i was

Listening to the album kind of like reflecting on the whole era i just thought about reputation by taylor swift because you loved the reputation era obviously who didn’t any anyone who says they didn’t is lying or just tasteless yeah exactly and we were amongst the people who were taylor swift defenders in 16 while she was going through that hate train era and i feel like we were both just like pissed off that whole year yeah we weren’t going to let anyone in the hallways of our high school disrespect her exactly we walked around

With taylor swift merch every single day taylor swift shanks to yeah just eliminate any of her naysayers yeah and so that whole year like 2016 before reputation came out she was facing like so much criticism she didn’t have any sort of public appearance that whole year people thought reputation was going to flop there were reports saying that the tour was going to flop the eror was going to flop and then the album comes out and she sells 1.

2 million units in the first week yeah yeah that’s insane and i think the world has been missing the drama and the sheer force of a reputation era similar to that and the reputation era by taylor was so monumental because her chips were definitely down the world was stacked up against her it seemed like anyone on social media anyone in the public was just loving hating on her she was the punchline of every joke it was almost like like a virtue signal to like be like you know i hate taylor too it was it was cool and right now hating ariana

Is cool so we’ve never seen a pop diva down hash diva down like ariana grande is right now so we were really interested to see what she was going to bring and if she was going to swing the reputation bat and she definitely did but in her own unique way i think this album was not necessarily the anger of the taylor swift angst like how dare you look what you made me do ariana was more so like laying down her her weapons and saying like look what you’ve done to me admitting a lot of heartbreak a lot of depression a lot of sadness that has

Come with this and she’s kind of like letting the haters win and take everything away from her except her truth so i think this reputation era is totally different and and this hopefully will be a referential arrow that will rebuild her back up to the top just like taylor did and it will be referred to as the eternal sunshine era sometime in the future because the the numbers are really showing in her favor the numbers are numbering and you’re right there was there were no like snake imagery for the eternal sunshine era it was very much

It’s like a teddy bear stuffed animal like she started with yes and which was a very fun dance house song whereas look what you made me do was very dark pop sort of like h look what you made me do yeah no i thought taylor was going to commit murder when when she said the world moves on another day another drama but not for me all i think about is karma and like your name in red underlined i was like someone put her on some sort of like watch list imagine if ariana did release a song like that like she went from like her blonde

Hair to just dark hair and yeah oh my god just like shaved head i got a list of names and yours is in red underlines why do i kind of want an arrow like that from her though um but no i do think that there are some similarities with this and that era in terms of like what the public was saying about both of them and then people thinking that their eras weren’t going to succeed as much as they did and it is is it has been making me so happy to see the numbers of eternal sunshine though like has have you just

Been waking up with a smile in your face every single day looking at these stats yes genuinely like my week has been so good like even if um like today i got like no sleep but i woke up and i was like even though i’m so tired i’ll just stream eternal sunshine like i’m so happy that it’s out like nothing is making me upset you wake up sleeping next to the vinyl every night literally i i got it last night i’m like that um meme of matthew perry rip like holding the vinyl in his like chair um yeah it just made me so happy and i was like

Genuinely worried for her i am an ariana defender till the end and it was almost cool and especially in my tik tok comment section to like find any flaw like any fault you can find with her just to prove that you’re on board with the hating i saw people saying that obviously like she looks too thin she looks crazy she looks like she’s on crack she looks like she has a dark side she’s been scaring me lately why did she talk like that why does she look like that why is she talking in a higher pitch oh my god her hands are dirty the

Guy she’s dating is so gross her hair looks like it’s starting to fall out her eyes are bulging out out of her head like these were all in my comment section and i was defending her every single day until the end but to be honest like there’s not that much i can do to like push an album sale like i can make some tik toks and like bring awareness to it but i just didn’t know how people would react so thank god people are seeming to either the either one or two things are happening they’re putting aside their morals and just

Streaming the album because it’s great or they realized oh i’m just a loner who was just feeding for any sort of human connection even if that meant tearing down someone else cuz i’m that lonely and i never really cared and this album is like persuading them to like her again just cuz now that she’s told her side of the story um they realized she isn’t this evil person as she said on her song we can’t be friends her and her truth sit in silence and i like that she did um like profess her innocence a lot this album was the best thing she could

Have done for her reputation exactly yeah this album was very much for her image i feel like and it’s i’m not saying it’s a bad thing for her to release an album as sort of you know pr and trying to get a better image of amongst the spotlight you know what i mean yeah and i think she didn’t have to tell her story you know like in fact she probably wouldn’t have if the strike never happened she said that she only recorded this album because the strike happened and she had to go back to the us so she was just like [ __ ] it i might

As well record an album i know which is crazy to think about because imagine if she didn’t tell the story people would still have this weird thought about her yeah who knows how much more it would spiral too and by the way the strike thank god it happened i’m sorry if you lost your job for a few months but we got an ar grande album and now you get a better pay and wage and residual so everyone wins here yeah and we’re still gonna get wicked yes it all worked out too um but as you were saying like that is so [ __ ] smart because it really

Could have spiraled out of control and now looking back not to like add to any conspiracy but i was wondering if like her shifting her appearance and seeming more fragile than ever just like as a concerned fan through the screen like before the album came out i was like maybe this hate is affecting her more than we thought mhm maybe maybe she is on her phone and is seeing everything i mean i feel like just the fact that she created this album that means she really does care about what the public thinks of her and that’s not a bad thing you

Know if i was someone like her she’s one of the biggest artists in the world most one of the most followed people on instagram you know like so many people know her and to just to just think that she was going through something where she would wake up every day thinking about what articles were made about her what people were saying about her and her relationship and stuff like that you know without knowing the whole story so i think it’s great that she did tell the full story because we know now like it’s not like she just left her man left her

Old man for her new man she was really going through some hard things in her relationship with dalton yeah some very very hard things we don’t even know the extent of it but there’s some lyrics in there that are very much so damning to him and we can get into that when we like break down the songs and the lyrics but definitely like it’s almost seen as cool to not care with the public things and i think in the past she’s kind of like written things off like in thank you next she’s just like i know they say i move on too fast ha but cuz i think

She wanted that sort of like you know like no offense i am ar grande and you’re not like i don’t really care that much but now she’s like okay i care like please stop so it’s interesting to like see someone let their guard down and like wave the white flag um in that sense and it really does let you know like your comments and your hate is seen your hate crafted the album like you guys wrote the album with the crazy comments you were saying you all are the reason why eternal sunshine is having its big moment right now why we can’t be

Friends is receiving over 9 million streams a day on spotify which by the way is insane what they say like you know they always say like the biggest heartbreak will write your best work i think that’s what happened too i think ariana really works well under pressure she made the album super fast she made her other most critically claimed album super fast and thank you next so um i i like like let’s get into like the sonics of the album because i think not even just the lyrics were crafted to send a message i think the sonics were too

Absolutely yeah like she knew like you know she was alone in this fight and it was her against the world so she was like let me enlist the best soldiers in the world to fight for me she was like i’m getting max martin i’m getting ilia and savin and just the best writers in the whole world to help me create the most perfect album i liked when the some of the reviews i said i read um they said it was pristinely engineered supremely inviting one of grande’s most meticulously crafted and texturally consistent releases it sounds as

Expensive as the gleaming treasure she sang about on seven rings and i think the hate made her work the hardest she ever has in her whole life and i think that was very um like she didn’t have chill on this album i feel like in position she had some chill here she was like i’m coming hard yeah and she did a lot of the writing and even some of the production elements too on this album whereas before she would enlist like victoria monae and um taylor parks to to write with her whereas this album it was really her like if you look at the

Songwriting credits a lot of the producers or yeah the two producers ilia and max martin were there any other producers on it there was like a couple um listed below ilia and max martin i think maybe like one or two yeah and so like it’s it’s mostly just you know it’s ariana on the songwriter credits so then the producers are credited as writers which is very normal so yeah i honestly think that this album was very self-written and i think that ariana wrote most of it herself she might have had some help from the producers with it

Like changing lyrics or you know after that but the concepts you can tell were definitely just ariana going to the studio being like this is what i want to make and this is what i have so far and then the producer just helped her elevate that and it really does sound expensive i love it yeah she came to hit hard she was like i’m going to make you love it so much that you have to love me again and i think when they said it was supremely inviting i think that was the goal like she wants you to listen because the production is so good so you

Can hear her story she knew she you weren’t going to listen to her talk so she was like you have to listen to the best songs in the world so i can like brainwash you to to like me again which we we’re going to end the episode into the whole like brainwashing thing because the vibe of this album is like brainwashing to forget all the trauma you went through as the reference to eternal sunshine that album is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind so there’s like an interesting question that i want to bring up at the end um is ari gran

Just brainwashing herself to forget or is she trying to brainwash you to like her again so we’re going to end the episode with do we like her again but i really do think that um what’s her goal just to get you in just to make you love her and believe her again but let’s like keep going on the the sonics of the album because actually no no i think we should start with the story yeah so i think this was the most like concise story she’s ever wr in album her best songw writing for sure in my opinion out of any of her other albums like thinking

About the whole entire body of work obviously she’s had great songwriting element before with like ghost in you know like that song is just so beautifully written and other songs too but i think this album as a full is just her best body of work when it comes to songw writing yeah i read one tweet that was like listening to this album all the way through it feels like one song yeah because it’s so concise what was your experience uh listening to it the first time i i loved how she started off with kind of starting about her break from

Dalton and then going into her new relationship because it really does tell the story it’s kind of chronological in that way and that helps it just that helps just make it like way more cohesive as well yeah um i feel like the order of the songs is so important like if there is any album that you need to listen to in order it is this album for sure and sometimes she does get a little bit in the past like eh with the track listing i know sts with like every artist is like i wish they did the track l a bit different this is like a

Fullprof track listing overall i would describe the album as fullprof like that is the word for it uh let’s start with the beginning few songs it’s about dalton yes but she couldn’t specifically say it’s about dalton i made a a youtube video about this just because i thought it was interesting but there was a confidentiality clause in their divorce that said ari gr cannot talk about them basically even in like a fictionalized way so people are like did she break the confidentiality clause because people think she was masking her love story

Under the concept album being like this is a concept like this isn’t necessarily based in my whole life right because of the confidentiality clause and even on zach sang when i first saw the zack sang interview i was like oh damn like she she’s kind of saying it’s a bit more vague like she was like it’s not really about all of my life and she was like it’s saying a lot but nothing at all and it’s being specific but super vague so i was like oh that’s kind of lame because she does have some pretty vague songs

That leave you wanting more for sure um but when the album came out i was like this is very specific yeah she um maybe she said that on zack saying just because of that yeah and she didn’t want to like get in any trouble with that but yeah i mean it’s not like she like says his name or specifically even like mentions divorce you know she talks about a relationship ending not even a marriage ending whereas a lot of divorce albums are very much so like like i think of like star cross by casey musg graves like that’s

Such a divorce album when she’s like i s the papers yesterday yeah and i think it is worth by the way i i love that song when when you started singing i was like i want to have him sing the whole thing like right now i just love it yeah like there was nothing about like you know signing papers ending a marriage it was just relationships ending which is you know that is a vague concept but by the way casey m’s new album comes out this week oh my gosh wait it’s this week yeah yeah on friday by by the way we want to do

Like a series here where we’re going to every pop girl album that comes out this year and like rank them amongst each other and like give them scores as if we are like the recording academy and who would we give the album of the year because i feel like this year is like the pop girl like royal royal rumble like everyone is putting their names in the hat when it comes to albums so we just want to like do our own kind of ranking so make sure to uh stay tuned for the main pop boys but casey musgraves next week she is she had made

A really good divorce album and i think it is worth like singing about a divorce like you went through a divorce i think you should capitalize on that you should sing about it you should do all the um like archetypes of a divorce album and say you sign the papers and all that but she had to say she referred to adon as a situationship yeah that’s what gagged me yes that was one of the lines where every reaction i watched everyone was like yeah situationship i was like wow you didn’t think of this as a marriage

You thought of it as a situation ship which honestly it goes to show how distant they were at the end end of their marriage because if she has to refer to it as a situationship it’s probably like okay they’re spending a lot of time together staying together you know talking but they’re not having that same connection they had early on in their relationship or early on in their marriage you know even though they were close together and he was staying with her in england because he was right yes they were still distant and they

Were having issues yeah and i think it it’s it’s very much an interesting kind of crazy thing to call your marriage a situationship even if you weren’t like maybe close towards the end it’s like whoa yeah you got married to that person like if my if one of like my three or four like inevitable ex-husbands in the future call me a a situationship i’m going to be upset three or four at least at least yeah but i mean maybe she did that also to just make it more of a vague thing and to get people i feel like she really

Did want people to relate to it too um which i think was smart because if she had taken the route where she’s talking about a marriage ending obviously a lot of her fans wouldn’t be able to relate because i feel like a lot of her fans are younger like early 20s you know mid 20s and so a lot of her fans probably aren’t married so yeah she is good we talked about this on a different episode but she’s good at like making it specific to her but like well like vague and like relatable enough where you know what she is referencing

But you can make it about you too sorry i was on my phone because i read this comment by someone that said she had to use situationship because she can’t legally say the word marriage divorce referring to hers adalton yeah which is wild which i mean yeah i guess if the song if the song was about marriage or like specifically saying marriage or divorce it would have been a entirely different concept um and i’m sure it’s ultim came for her yeah ultimately like we know the song is about him just because of like everything that happened

But yeah so you were gagged right at the start of the album right yeah for sure and i like this uh variety review of it speaking of like how she will mind details of her personal life she’s they say of course eternal sunshine the title is ironic duh because it’s selfly it’s a selfly referential musical diary of a life lived very publicly by someone with a beyonce tores level ability to share just enough to keep her ravenous fans both informed and guessing at the same time and i think that is very true in what she was

Doing there and we we don’t yeah we’re very informed about dalton now we never really knew him uh but now we hate him yeah now we know everything about him yeah welcome to our [ __ ] list she now the fans were like really hating him especially for lyrics like uh on don’t want to break up again they she said i something about how she cries at night and he turns up the tv to drowned out her crying going to bed crying is crazy going to bed crying and not giving a [ __ ] that your like wife named ariana [ __ ] grande is crying in your

Bed how egotistical and like in your own world emotionally unintelligent do you have to be to let your wife go to bed crying like i don’t care what she did that day yeah like that’s really [ __ ] up that you’re like turning up like love is blind to drown her out at the end of the day you are next to ariana grande yeah the queen yeah your financial uh provider yes yes and to just like let her go to sleep crying thinking about ariana crying at night like makes me so sad yeah it it it almost makes me like i don’t even want to think about it like i

Need to like put those things in my head to like not even like remember that yeah cuz that’s i can like start crying right now honestly it’s very [ __ ] up i do think she took it easy on him still though because not only were the songs not that mean yeah she did expose him a bit which i think was welld deserved if he really did those things but i also think um she kind of took it easy like is kind of a happy breakup song you know at least we both tried and then the next song she’s like you didn’t even try but

Still like she’s trying to give him some grace and then we get to the midpoint of the album where it’s songs like eternal sunshine and true story come in where she’s starting to like shift it into like okay let me take some responsibility as well yeah which i think is smart too because obviously she’s aware of what people are saying about her and she doesn’t want to be like okay you all are completely wrong like i did nothing wrong at all and which yeah that’s like i said earlier that’s not not something that she had to

Do like she took accountability and at that point nobody can hate on her no i completely agree and i like how she can plead innocence yet take responsibility for the gray area of it all for how it looks bad for how she played into her own divorce demise because of course she did i’m sure she thinks she could have tried harder as well in the song she did say she tried to go to therapy she blamed it on herself for her own codependence but then in eternal sunshine she does expose dalton for kind of like moving on

First um she says so now we play our separate scenes now she’s in my bed laying on your chest and now i’m in my head wondering how it ends which is one thing that i hope everybody is gagged about because everybody just assumed that ariana moved on like right away started dating ethan not thinking that dalton was also moving on let alone you know before ariana did yeah like if your marriage is dead in the water like girl don’t don’t beat the dead horse like it’s just dead and the in the intro she’s like how do i know if i’m in the

Right relationship i had an interaction 5 weeks ago i wonder if he’s thinking about it i think that means she interacted with ethan and felt a spark and she knew for sure her relationship was dead but like i always say this but like there was no home left to wreck do you know what i’m saying sure they were like legally on paper still married but there was all these rumors that he never flew out to england to see her once while she was filming wicked and how ethan and his wife were already broken up from december the year before so i

Think both of them were like in this boat of you know there’s no home left to wreck for us and both of our spouses suck and should we jump ship cuz we know we’re not in the right relationship and i like the admission of contemplation before she acted on her feelings for ethan because i think people were just like she pounced on him right when she felt like it and she didn’t consider anything she didn’t consider dalton she didn’t consider lily or anything but she’s like i feel like in songs like eternal sunshine and the the intro she’s

Contemplating it cuz she doesn’t know if it’s like the correct thing to do yet and she waited until it was the right time and then she also admits like the gray area still makes me look bad but i’m not the h wer you think i am she is not and yeah i hope that everybody feels so stupid after hearing these songs thank you everybody hating her what i was saying is like in like 5 years when you look back if you didn’t support ariana in 2023 it’ll be like if you didn’t support taylor in 2016 like you will look back and be like i was magetic

Yeah no literally and there’s so many people now who are like yeah i hated taylor swift but now they like her yeah now it’s like unclockable love for her and i and i just can’t wait for ariana to just um take over we’ve definitely gotten like a surplus of taylor so i’m happy that like ariana’s here right yeah yeah she honestly did release this at the perfect time though too because it has been over three years since positions and even though people were hating on ariana it was more so like also people were missing her music and

People were like oh it’s been 3 years no ariana music yeah and so the release time was honestly perfect like people were missing her and i think that’s one reason why people are maybe quicker to forgive her than taylor yeah which is something that we can get into at the end when we talk about you know should she be forgive no i think that’s smart i think people are acting quickly to forgive her which i never would have guessed let’s let’s move into like the three4 point of the album so like her and dalon divorce her and ethan have you

Know been catching each other’s eye and they’re not sure what to do you know they started to date playing around there’s paparazzi photos now everyone hates them you know now everyone hates you yeah so it’s so sad that she had to write kind of two songs yes and and we can’t be friends about um how much the public turned against her and how they made her a a villain even true story yeah she’s like i’ll play the villain if you want but this is untrue story based on untrue events yeah um and it’s so sad like this is definitely the highlight of

The album i think we can’t be friends because and it’s also like the saddest song any pop star has ever made about her relationship to the public cuz it’s song about how like she knows how much everyone hates her that she had to write a song about it basically like unanimously saying like a blake statement like i know you hate me but um i’ll wait for your love again one day it makes me so sad to hear it honestly even like the production it just like elevates the sadness of the song i think and we can’t be friends is a great song

Because i think it like touches on all of the subjects of eternal sunshine similar to honestly how yes and does even though yes and is very vague and doesn’t really say anything about her personal life other than why do you care so much about who ride yeah it’s it’s vague in the terms of like the relationship she’s like that’s the only line of about it that’s it yeah exactly and so i think i think yes an was honestly a good way to lead the album i don’t know how you feel about it being a lead single but i think that it was a

Smart way for her to be like this is something that a lot of people go through which is people people criticizing others but not necessarily knowing what is going on in their lives and then her going through the album being like okay this is what has been going on in my life over the past year and so i personally think was a good way to lead the album yeah same and i think what will resonate with people a lot is this album can really be for anyone who feels like misunderstood or like vastly just like painted out to be something they’re not

Or like was cast as the villain in someone’s story yeah just cuz they were committed to misunderstanding you so i like the message of yes and um and we can’t be friends yeah those photos of her like crying in the studio made me very sad but i think that was when she was recording we can’t be friends and i think it was smart she started with the sn and then uh that was kind of like the more um i guess more like tiptoe around it to kind of like put her feet back into it and like test the waters too for sure yeah cuz i i’ve honestly saw a lot

Of criticism after the album dropped about yes and being the lead single people are like okay this album’s great but why the [ __ ] was yes and the lead single because yeah not only lyrically was it a little bit confusing about you know how the whole album is about her relationship and like her marriage and leading to a new relationship whereas yes ends very vague but it’s sonically very different from the rest of the album with it being a house song but how did you feel about yes and being a house song and then the

Rest of the album just being completely different sonically i don’t know i thought it was interesting um i guess i still don’t really know how i feel the it’s interesting how cohesive the album is even though it does dip into like a lot of different genres cuz you look at like the boy’s mind that’s very like ’90s almost like in sinky dance pop yeah and then a song like imperfect for you is very acoustic and then you have like we can’t be friends which is kind of another dance yeah um i’d say like club pop they’re all cohesive except yes yes

And so like it’s i wish she like maybe altered it a bit yeah but um i i i i don’t know i think it was just the biggest risk she took on the album and maybe it did not pay off for sure i saw some people say that it was more so like a jump scare when yes came out on the album but i think that i made a tik tok about this the other day i think that at the end of the day ariana is a pop girl and she will always serve pop and dance on no matter what album she does even with positions i would say positions being the lead single that is a very

Much i mean that is a pop song you know even though it has r&b elements and the rest of the album is very r&b positions was the most pop song on the album and so i feel like she wanted to do that formula again with eternal sunshine by starting with a strong pop song that would be played on the radio get a lot of people to hear her voice again for sure yeah and then leading into the album where she tells her full story yeah i still don’t know really the full scope of what she was thinking with yes and yeah but i’ll have to like dig into

It i still think it was a good song like everyone i feel like everyone was like i don’t hate yes and but it’s probably not the best song in the alb like they’re like i don’t love it but i don’t hate it she almost did the taylor swift formula where taylor has a lot of times chosen the worst songs on her album as a lead single honestly with like 1989 shake it off being the lead single obviously not the best song in the album reputation look what you maybe do great song i love it but not the best song on the album me

From lover being the lead single probably the worst song on the album prob the worst song on the album but she started those start she started with those songs because they got people talking yeah so yeah i feel like yes an was almost like um temperature check like do you do you hate me that much like but before i dropped the album do hate me that much and since it was the only one that was dropped as a standalone it makes sense that like it sounds most different from the whole album because it was drop as like standing alone yeah

Um i do like the kind of like brainwashing um bridge cuz like the the question here is like is she trying to brainwash us to like her again or should we actually like her again i like like the uh like say and repeat thing where she’s like uh my tongue is sacred i speak upon what i like i love that part of the song yeah like it’s almost like she’s like like hypnotizing you in some way she’s like don’t comment on my body do not reply my face is sitting no disguise yeah yeah i’m like yes arana i don’t care who sck you like

I go into some tr but it’s like and i love the video she has like her tuning fork and she’s like my face is sitting i don’t need no disguise like stop commenting on my stuff so i think that was like a necessary thing where she was like i’m being vulnerable but at the same time like you know suck my dick yeah exactly like who honestly gives a [ __ ] about who’s i ride yeah i feel like she made that song last she was like honestly that was really sappy i don’t really give a [ __ ] and then she just made proba that would makees sense honestly yeah

Yeah interesting that she went the house outout for that song but i will not criticize her for that because it’s a fun song it’s fun to dance too gay clubs love it whatever yeah i mean i still get down to it um we can’t be friends though i feel like we kind of got off track of like the plot of the album but we can’t be friends is definitely where she’s like admitting like y’all hurt my feelings um i can’t wait to be friends again and i really like the bridge when she says um like she pleads her innocence and it’s kind of like her

Mirrorball by taylor swift moment because she says i know that you made me this way like i’m not this way you’re just painting me out to be this way she says know that you made me i don’t like how you paint me yet i’m still here hanging i’m not what you made me mhm which is like taylor swift is like i get beaten down so much i’m like this like shattered mirror ball that just hangs there because i still want the love of the the people yeah like ariana’s like you painted me this way and hung me up on the wall and i’m still here for you

To see me cuz i genuinely want you to like me it’s honestly also like shame on you for making me this way without actually knowing the true story yeah so and i i yeah and we can’t be friends is a smart course because she’s like she’s not like begging for you to like her again she’s not like on her hands and knes she’s like okay you can’t be my friend right now and i don’t really want your friendship right now so we can’t be friends i hope you hear the album and like that’s when i’ll get your love back yeah and i feel like she has been

Getting her love back yeah and her lick back but the the last three songs i kind of think are like the happy songs oh for sure i think track 10 is like where she leans into into the concept of it all and that’s where like her memory is a ray she doesn’t want to think about her divorce anymore she doesn’t want to think about how people hate her anymore and that’s kind of symbolized in the music video she puts on the little head forgetting device and forgets it all brush it off yeah yeah and then the last three are like kind of happy she’s like

You know what i actually don’t hate dalton and i really am happy with ethan and on ordinary thing she’s like i think i made the right choice yeah exactly and i and i hope that people listen to that and be like okay she actually is really happy right now there’s no reason to hate her yeah it repaints ethan slater in a nice light too cuz to be honest we never like really knew him besides his portrayal of spongebob and the the broadway play no exactly it made me want to like hear his side of a story in an album like where’s his album i want to

Hear it yeah i oh my god i saw someone make a tik tok about the boy is mine and like they did a stitch to it and and she was like girl the boy’s yours cuz no one else wants him i was like oh my god you’re so annoying but i like did laugh but um that’s kind of crazy that that’s is about him i know trying to imagine like short the boy’s mind thinking about ethan well yeah i don’t know weird she has she has a weird taste i i i can’t like defend her but we can’t like we also can’t hate her for her taste you know what i mean like yeah i mean i have

A weird taste too i only date men in like their 60s so yeah and like i would never judge you for that thank you um so yeah i am happy that ethan was kind of like repainted in a good light and lily jay is just probably punching a wall somewhere yeah she’s writing her album now i don’t even know i’m so over her yeah i mean she never started but bless her heart it’s all i got to say yeah and she never even said she hom wrecked all she said was she’s not a girl you know she’s kind of observing what the public are thinking about her ariana right now

Which is oh that’s all she’s thinking about right now yeah that’s all she’s thinking about it’s taking over her life and she is pissed yeah yeah very interesting i’m not even gonna say anything about her um i hope she’s enjoying hille with her baby who because who the [ __ ] is she um but yeah so that’s kind of like the lyrics of the album mh i feel like we could get into how people are critiquing because as we were saying it is like a foolproof album i think sonically lyrics are best they’ve ever been the production is the best that

It’s ever been it’s foolproof so there is one critique i’m seeing a lot where people people seem to think she’s referencing too many other bodies of work in one album and she’s relying on like taking cuts of musical greats to make her own great album i hate this kind of criticism because people are acting like inspiration does not exist exactly and that people can’t take inspiration and bring that into their own body of work because it’s not like ariana is copying anything like she is making this whole album so original even

Though she has taken inspiration from other artists and um yeah like other ideas you know like if i was creating an album right now i would be inspired by so many things yeah and no ex exactly i think she did teeter the line sometimes this um stipp it from the new york times review of the album says strap yourself in and we’ll start with the stuff grande wants us to remember when you hear her faletto hydrop plane across the beat of the boy’s mind i love the words they use in these reviews falsetto hydroplane wow

You’ll remember brandy and monica singing those same words back in 1998 when you hear grande cooning along the disco gallop of we can’t be friends wait for your love you’ll recall dancing on my own from robin’s dancing on my own in 2010 when you hear the friendly pop house thump of yes and you will flash back to the indelible frion of madonna’s vogue circa 1990 and when you see the inspiration in grande’s music video you’ll remember paula abdul’s cold hearted if you check the credits you’ll keep seeing max martin which means

You’ll remember this slew of millennial lore that she’s including and then they kind of questioned music feels this easy to get into it’s just as easy to get out of every beat feels frictionless every melody feels smooth every reference feels deeply familiar and when it’s all over you might not remember any of it at all so they’re saying she basically referenced so much that we may be impressed right now but we’ll kind of remember the references more than her in the end what do you think about that i don’t know i think ariana grande like i

Did kind of like write a reply to this because like i just want to like you know defend her in a way yeah um i think ariana grande definitely is a lover of music she’s an intense lover of art in all form she’s an actress she’s a a singer and when she’s creating her art her references are at the top of her mind just because she does love them so much she loves like mariah carey and she definitely take notes from that and madonna throughout her whole career to where people have accused her of being like a homage artist to them sometimes

Um people have accused her of copying like seven rings from other artists and this has been a common thread in her career i like when you are ariana grande you are so pristine in your work like you are like a a prodigy you are one of the best voices of all time so you have the luxury of of referencing things and being secure enough in your talent to take them to new heights and not fall below um like being forgetful in comparison to the reference whereas other artists couldn’t even like gaze that much into the sun like they’re not

Even going to bother to touch a title called the boy is mine because they know they couldn’t do it justice but when you’re ariana grande people are imploring for you to do these things because they know the jumping through hoops like olympic style stuff you can do with your voice so they want to hear you in this genre and that one and they want to hear you reference the 90s and do a dance track like bogue which i don’t even think yes and is like too much like bog like other people like i don’t think so either no shade to like

Beyonce but beyonce interpretated bog way more obviously yeah and everyone does these things and i feel like ariana uh tiptoes around them enough to pay homage yet make it her own at the same time because she’s giving the people what they want they ask her to reference things like this all the time and a lot of people are chasing a musical sound from equally as um i would say like derivative terms like not their own like original thoughts like a lot of people are trend chasing what’s on the radio right now i’ll copy that ara isn’t

Concerned with copying a trend she’s concerned with paying homage to the greats because she knows she’s great as well definitely and she’s taking it to new height so i would say sure she references a lot and i definitely have critiqued her for that in the past too um but she always like comes out on top and we always seem to remember her when whenever this conversation gets brought up yeah like she does make timeless songs because she’s taking hints from timeless songs yeah and i think it’s important to remember that at the end

That they are references you know it’s not like she’s they don’t even feel like full like samples or interpolations you know especially with brandy and monica you know obviously she says the boy is mine and like does that in a similar way but it’s not even in my opinion a full interpolation and you know other artists will full on sample other other songs and interpolate other artists which is fine like that’s a thing that’s done so much in music beyonce does that so much if you look at the credits for renaissance the credits are huge because

Of the amount of samples that are on there literally like yeah yeah i don’t really understand why she is getting criticism for that because yeah there are references that inspired her but it’s not like she’s copying them or making something not original yeah no i agree new york times said she tiptoed dangerously close to dancing on my own which i was like interesting whereas pitchfork said it was a downright knockoff downright knockoff that’s insane as if to call it a knockoff is just absolutely demonic no it is like

Deplorable like how dare you and i think in terms of like is grounded trying to brainwash us because i think everyone tries to manipulate her intentions kind of similarly that they do to a new you know woman who has bestowed the most hated woman of the year title in like that taylor swift was in 2016 they’re always like wondering what your intentions are so i think ariana almost wanted to like make you love her so much that she’s going to reference your favorite songs and be like look i did these songs and now look you love them

And i did them in my own way and made them new fresh and exciting with like like the old flare that you like but with a modern twist that i and only i can bring exactly only she can bring yeah like you were saying i really don’t think any other artist could have done this in the way that she did and make it as original as she did i completely agree so i feel like i don’t know i you can like not like that all you want that she definitely tiptoe dangerously close to dancing on my own but is getting 9 million streams on spotify today i’m

Sure you’ve streamed it today yeah i’m sure it’s on your mind it’s all you’re thinking about yeah um you’re getting it to number one thank you so much and i will say the the production of like those like like of dancing on my own like production like hyper kind of like club mix there is there but the melody is so different i’m in the corner watching you kiss her oh whereas we can’t be friends is we can’t be friends but i’d like to just pr 10 so different like the bridge is insanely different yeah like the the

Climaxes of the songs i think the songs versus like are very identical but like when you get to the climax in the bridge in these choruses you’re like oh this is it has its own personality exactly it’s completely fresh ariana put her sound to it that we all love and yeah it’s getting streamed so much i love it yeah and maybe this is me saying like taylor swift is like michael jackson level famous again and everyone one will hate me but ara grande can reference so much because she has been bestowed some of the best talent of all time like she can

Almost like pick up where those older artists left off and take their vision and their like flavor to new heights and deliver us something so iconic like yes and felt like a passing up the torch moment from madonna to ariana mh and in the past like we know they’re friends like we know madonna like has passed that sample to her like she gets it the boy’s mind like she took that 90 in ’90s flare produced by the late ’90s producer max martin himself to a current day standard and everyone’s like 9s music just isn’t made the same anymore

Like oh my god well she gave it to you the best way it could have been brought exactly and it’s not like any of these artists are pressed that she is doing this like you said like ariana and madonna they love each other they’re friends and so madonna didn’t hear yes and and’s like are you kidding me why is she doing this like these artists are probably glad that ariana is bringing their songs to a whole new audience not i shouldn’t even say like their songs to a whole new audience just like inspiration from these songs to a whole

New audience they like breathe she breathe new life into it yeah exactly because especially for the younger audience they’re not aware of brandy and monica and madonna as much as the older audience is and so i i i like when artists do this and pull inspiration from the 90s and beforehand and bring it to a whole new audience i like when ava max does it we love when a we love ava max does it it and um yeah there in my there’s nothing wrong with it if you’re doing something original and you’re not taking it and making a complete copy of

It and it’s fine like you know yeah also if that song like masterfully conveyed an emotion that you want to like dancing on my own was was kind of like longing depressive dance pop like she wanted a longing depressive dance pop song so of course she’s going to like take from those kind of like the like the treasures of that genre i saw people even saying that nobody gets me me by sza sounds a lot like imperfect for you as if she’s trying to like grift off of her now yeah and i’m like what like it’s just an acoustic song literally i and

Yeah even like nobody gets me bya that has references not even references but i feel like similarities to other songs too because of the chord progression like fade into you by maisy star it has the same exact chord production as um nobody gets me by sza and even like tate mccrae’s song on her album i’m like blinking on the name of the song but there’s a song that has like that same exact chord progression and people are like this sounds like this song you know so people need to understand the difference between having a similar

Chord progression and similar instrumentals then directly interpolating or sampling something because that song doesn’t sample siza it doesn’t sample maisy star it’s its own song just has a similar chord progression also it’s like a bigger risk to to reference because if you let us down down like that’s that’s really bad mhm so yeah i don’t know the the numbers are doing so good um it’s only going up on spotify every day with 50 well 49.

4 million streams on the fourth day her snl performance really helped yeah definitely i’m seeing so many viral content out of that on tik tok too yes and i also think it’s super fascinating how well this album is doing despite what’s going on between umg and tik tok right now because obviously the songs cannot be used in their own original way on tik tok so i’m seeing a lot of altered versions of we can’t be friends being used on tik tok like whether it’s sped up or slowed down and i think that’s super fascinating because

Promotion of this album is very different without i know my god without the original versions on tik tok otherwise you’d probably be seeing ariana she’s not like a tik tocker but you’d probably see her making like some tik tok to the songs you know or her team using some of the audios on tik tok but they have to kind of be creative with how they want to promote this and i think her going on snl was really smart because people are able to upload the live versions on tik tok and not get them taken down um and at the end of the

Day they’re still getting people to talk about the album talk about her performance talk about the songs yeah tik tok is definitely one of the biggest ways to spread it even if you’re like so established in aist you still need to push it and tik tok is the way to do it she posted the her own lyric video on tik tok yesterday i think to we can’t be friends it was put on mute by tik tok yeah after it got after it got a million likes so like at least something but i saw an ara grande fan page tweet like we lost guys like yeah umg took took down

Her video i saw yeah know some of them were like pissed today too because the one of the audios of we can’t be friends which had which had the most amount of videos i think it had like 50,000 videos created was taken down after ariana posted a video with that exact audio and so people were like ah this is happening as the song is getting n million streams on spotify but people are still finding ways to share it spread it love it stream it yeah live it yeah live it um yeah no i agree i hope she does more live

Performances i hope she like goes to like the kelly clarkson show or the tonight show or something um like you said we can’t be friends is number one in spotify the song we can’t be friends was initially projected to debut top five which is very good it’s now competing for number one it’s projected to be in the top three for sure four points 4% away from the number one spot yeah which is great because i think number one was going to be kanye and so ariana is beating kanye she’s going to someone had to yeah someone had to beat him it’s like who do

People dislike more yeah you know yeah and i’m honestly excited excited to see how well it continues to do because it is the song we can’t be friends has only risen ever since friday when the album came out and so today it reached a new daily high of nine million streams as we said but i’m so excited to see it rise i remember feeling a similar way when flowers by mal cyrus was rising and i remember when she released it it debuted with like 7 million streams and then it got up to like 17 million daily streams

Which is insane so i’m excited to see the journey of we can’t be friends and the peaks it reaches with streams yeah i’m so excited 17 million daily streams oh my god insane that’s crazy if ariana could get to that that would be incredible be number one for sure i think she could i think if her team does the right moves i think if she does more performances it could definitely happen they just have to act on it quickly because the song is rising as we speak and so yeah i think if they take advantage of the moment and

Then it will keep on rising i think yeah she has to do more performances she should find ways to promote the song on tik tok without the audio but i’m excited to see it rise yeah i agree live performances are going to be key not only on the charts but to make people like her again i think people were so like you kind of get aside of the story through someone’s like like body language and how visibly hurt she looked like performing the song and i think that made people very much so like her again we’ve we’ve never really seen her

Cry like that in the we can’t be friends uh music video so i think any more uh like live action we can get from her exactly because if there’s anything people are obsessed with it’s her live vocals and i remember i think that that is a big reason too why she did the yours truly live edition for the 10 year anniversary because this was in the heat of all the hate she was getting and then she started teasing it by posting the sheet music of yours truly and i honestly think that part of the reason why she did that was because she’s like

Okay i’m getting so much hate right now i haven’t done anything music related in so long what is going to get people to be excited about me again my live vocals yeah no exactly that’s like she really is irreplaceable incomparable like she has an exclusive gift that you know if you want to deny yourself of that sure yeah but she’s like i dare you yeah i dare you to to look away and you definitely won’t i was surprised how much the album sounds like yours truly buy and don’t uh don’t want to break up again i was like whoa this

Is like so yours truly some of the the previews were like it’s sweeten or mixed with thank you next i don’t agree yeah that’s what her label was saying in that one video that she shared after she played them the album her main anr her label was like sweetener makes thank you meets thank you next and when i was listening to the album i was like huh i was trying to like understand why her label might have thought that or why other people might have thought that but i definitely think it sounds very different it sounds like its own era for

Sure yeah i agree it’s i i don’t hear sweetener at all likei i love sweetener but it doesn’t sonically sound like it it like the production the how she’s singing how she’s vocalizing does not sound like that sweeter was so different so different very like experimental kind of yes it was definitely strange and even the singles were like big big big like it gody like pompous like belting no tears up to cry like intense god is a woman whereas like these are not that yeah sweetener honestly was very fel you can tell that it was produced by him um

And then this one you can tell it’s very much just her story it’s like self-written most of mostly i think and then you can hear you know max martin and ilia do their thing yeah production wise it’s giving like yours truly mixed with positions in my opinion it’s way more positions than thank you next for sure and sweetener lyrically it’s thank you next but okay um but yours truly in pos like positions i think is what it sounds like which is so interesting because that’s like the first and the latest of her so

I was like a which i think is another way of like is ar grande trying to brainwash us through this album because she’s like let me remind you of every era i’ve ever done to remind you why you love me like i’m going to make it sound like yours truly if you start to stand me then i’ll make it sound like my my everything a bit to if you started to stand me then uh i don’t think it sounds like dangerous woman at all but that’s like the least it sounds like but i’ll remind you of sweetener and thank you next and positions just like to make you

Love me yeah and she’s she was so smart for that she honestly took inspirations from those eras and then made an entirely original project that sounds like its own era which i love yeah she’s definitely pulling out all the stops to like brainwash you and it’s like chris jenner pr kind of like story like manipulation here like the level of pristine um not like manipulation that’s not the word but like uh narrative like rewriting like which is the truth by the way i would i i would say truth exposing narrative rewriting like this is the

True narrative like it’s this is the best thing she could have done for herself the way it sounds her story um so i want to read this quote from the washington post it says yes grande’s recent romantic turbulence has been thoroughly mulched into clickable peeps of digital gossip but unlike with her signature names naming 2018 breakup anthem thank you next she’s chosen to keep the lyrics vague in these new songs using the consumate plushness of her voice to obscure the details in of her bruised up heart has our hero undergone

The memory wipe she’s talking about on the title track or is she conducting the procedure on us instead and i just love the the question that they brought up is she trying to make herself forget or is she trying to make you forget and can you like her again so can you like her again do you love her again i never stopped her but if i’m trying my hardest to look at it from the point of view of a person who hates her i feel like i would be able to forgive her after listening to this because we didn’t know her story before we didn’t know what

Exactly she was going through and we still don’t know exactly what she was going through to the extent but i think that we know that there was a lot of hard times she was facing with dalton and um i think we can understand that that was going on for a while and she decided to get into a new relationship because it was the right time to and i think that we can look at this and be like okay this is her story you can understand that it wasn’t there was no h wrecking going on honestly like there was no cheating no

Home wrecking and that was one thing that people were saying about her and criticizing her for yeah so i think that people should just enjoy the music and be glad that she’s even deciding to tell her story yeah cuz we could have lost her like you guys could have scared her off and i would have never for forgiven you i would have burned the world down like i’m not even kidding i would have burned the world down if she never released again so i’m very happy and i think the story of the album is like wow i blame you i blame me but the end is

Like i’m imperfect yeah i am going to stick by my choice though and that’s kind of how ordinary things ends also in ordinary things i’m like she called me out maybe us like both because she was like uh kind of like she was referencing how her new man makes her feel and the lyric was you hit like my biggest fan when all when i hear what the criti say and she she sent me this because i i defend her on tik tok like every day so she sent me this in the mail yes and so cute yes and yeah one day i woke up with a text for my manager and he was like r

In gr’s team like wants to like to to send you a gift and i was like what so cute she does so she appreciates people who give her the benefit of the doubt and invite nuance to the conversation and aren’t just quick to hate her as if she’s not a human yeah and you know maybe any of the changes we see in her are as a result of hatred so let’s not like hate her let’s i so glad she’s getting love right now because i think that’s going to be very healing for her not that charts are the most important but it’s going to heal her a lot oh for

Sure but um when she said that lyric i was like she has seen me and has thanked me for like defending her so i was like that lyrics about me no that’s so cute honestly that makes me so happy and i truly hope that she is reflecting on what people are saying about her right now and is feeling a lot better about it and is feeling a lot more happy obviously she’s probably not completely healed about the public criticizing her because how can you be like taylor said probably is still not healed from that from what she went through in 2016 so i

Feel like it’s something that will continue to affect her but i think it’s something that will make her feel better now and will allow her to live her life with ethan happily yeah in a pineapple under the sea they are brighter days coming um yeah and i’ve always loved her to answer the question like has she brainwashed me to like her again i never stop i love you [ __ ] i’m always going to love you [ __ ] i’m never going to stop loving you [ __ ] you could you could kill someone’s wife and i would still love you so um let’s

Should we wrap this up by saying our top three on the album yes you go first no you go first okay i have to think about it um yeah i know i was like look you have to think about it too on the side um top three i love we can’t be friends i honestly think that’s my number one okay we can’t be friends true story and oh no i love the boy is mine though i know we can’t be friends the boy is mine and eternal sunshine word yeah i mean they’re in so good so wait it was what what was the top we can’t be friends true story eternal sunshine boss

Yes yours um truly oh t um yeah for now i say we can’t be friends too that one really hits hard and everyone can relate to it and like makes me cry and i’m so happy for success so we can’t be friends and then i’ll say in perfect for you the acoustic version is better than the original on the slightly that’s so good too i don’t know what instrument she’s playing it it’s one of those instruments that you pluck not it’s probably not her who’s playing it but studio like imperfect for you uh no i love the acoustic though i wish she

Made that like the real version but and i think i just love it cuz she performed it on snl but we can’t be friends imp perfect for you and i wish i hated you that’s like a sleeper hit for me so sleeper hit but the boy mind is like a really close top three like it’s like almost going to surpass i wish i hated you that song is so it just like makes me feel like so yeah viby it’s like a max martin like uppercut yes exactly it’s so good yeah yeah it’s a different side of the album that i just truly enjoy yeah so i think ar and grande has

Literally made a masterpiece not only sonically but for her reputation and i think just like tlor she’s come out on top she did and no matter how much you hate her how much you still continue to hate her she is winning and the numbers prove it just like reputation her and um if you don’t like her don’t go to the the ticket master waiting list when the tour starts because we will be in the the line first don’t even bother don’t bother guys well well thank you so much for joining into this episode we truly did enjoy talking
