The Best & Worst Looks From The Oscars Red Carpet – Ty

From Mamamia, welcome to The Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I’m Laura Brodnik. ; And I’m Em Vornehm. ; And welcome to our Oscars red carpet special. ; [laughter] ; You’re so excited already. We haven’t even jumped in yet. ; I’m going to do this whole episode with my eyes closed. ; Yeah, why do you have your eyes closed? Are you not excited to see me? I rushed back from New York on multiple flights to be here for this moment, to be here with you.

; Yeah, okay. I think [laughter] I’m good. I’m scared I’m going to cry. ; We’re only talking about the red carpet. Save your tears for tomorrow. So yes, everyone, just so you know, today is all about the red carpet looks, the best and worst looks, little things that happened on the red carpet, and then tomorrow Em and I will be back in your ears to do a full ceremony recap.

Cuz there is so much to say. ; much to say, and as we’re recording this episode, it’s happening right now. ; It is happening right now. So we’ve seen a few winners. We’re It’s literally happening outside these doors. We’re going to have to run out when we finish. ; FOMO already. ; I know, so we’re not going to talk about any winners cuz we’ll save it all for tomorrow.

; So we’re just jumping into the red carpet. ; Okay. This red carpet I mean top top top top top line ; Mhm. ; I was a bit like I wanted more. ; This is the thing, as we always say about the Oscars, is it’s getting safer and safer and safer every year. Celebrity fashion in general has gotten very safe at award shows cuz everyone’s so doesn’t want to look disrespectful or put a foot out of line, and people are saving like the crazy over-the-top looks for their press tours now.

; Yeah. Including like the Met Gala, right? Like I feel like even Met Gala is recently I’m like, uh this feels safe. ; do it so they do it for the Met Gala, their press tour, or the after-parties where people take a risk. ; That’s what I’m excited for, the Vanity Fair after-party. ; Yes, that’s where the good looks will come out.

So we had a few nice looks tonight, but again, everyone’s playing it super super safe. ; I’ve noticed a lot of feathers. ; Yeah, which I quite liked. ; I like a feather. ; And the return of the peplum, which is I quite like a peplum. ; Okay. I’m so excited about peplums being back. ; What Oh, cuz you can pull off a peplum. ; Not everyone can, so I understand.

Like, I don’t mean to speak out of turn, but like if you can, it’s a ; like the right length of peplum. You know what I mean? Like, sometimes it’s a bit too peplumy. ; Yeah. No, you can’t have a sticky-out one. ; Yeah, yeah, yeah. ; I love when we talk about fashion. We’re so bad at it. ; so great at fashion. ; I can just already see a commenter being like, “Can you get someone who can actually talk about fashion on there?” And so, you’ve come to the wrong place.

; That’s so true. Speaking of peplum, this actually is This look actually isn’t in my best dressed list. But I loved Kate Hudson’s look. ; Oh, yes. Okay, can we kick off with that? Because I do want to I do want to talk about that. ; And she did the red carpet with Goldie Hawn. ; Yes, that was so cute.

So, she’s got like quite a crew there, and I guess that’s what happens if you’ve got like a super, super famous family. So, she’s wearing Armani Privé. ; Armani Privé. ; A beautiful, almost like a mint green shimmery silver gown, strapless with a peplum, the classic kind of side Hollywood curls, and a diamond necklace. And honestly, she looks 10 out of 10.

; Yeah, it’s very also very Kate Hudson. ; Yes. So, she’s nominated for best actress, which again was one of those ones where we didn’t think she was going to be nominated, and then she just ran a really good campaign. But yeah, she has got her partner there, who’s the father of her daughter, so he walked the red carpet with her, but she’s also got her mother Goldie Hawn, who I think she is the one who’s sitting with her, cuz I think you can have a few family up the back in the cheap seats.

And then you can have um like one person sitting with you, so it’s her mom. And then Kurt Russell, who is technically her step father. I mean, they’re not married, but has like she calls him pa, has like raised her, is there. And he was actually saying to me, cuz I hung out with him over the weekend in New York, he was actually saying that he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to go in terms of like tickets and stuff.

So, he um was going to have a suit I don’t know how true this is. He’s like, “I’ll have a suit on hand in case I get the call up.” So, I guess he did. ; sweet. ; And she ; I reckon he should have been nominated for Monarch season 2. ; [laughter] ; He wins for a Godzilla TV show, wins an Oscar. If you had your choice.

; I honestly, he would be best actor. ; If you’re looking for a new show to get obsessed with, The Madison on Paramount Plus is where to go. From the creator of Yellowstone, this original series stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, and Patrick J. Adams. It’s a true powerhouse cast.

But, more than that, it’s a raw, beautiful story about a family trading city life for the rural countryside of Montana after a major loss. The Madison, streaming now on Paramount Plus. ; I also love that Kate Hudson is an early contender for best dressed. I mean, it’s a very safe, but it just looks so beautiful.

Because it’s been, oh my god, close to 20 years, or just over 20 years, since she was nominated for her first Oscar. ; Oh, wow. ; look that she wore to the Oscars got absolutely ripped apart. ; was it? ; It was It was actually beautiful. I remember I was like a kid. NO, I [laughter] WASN’T. I WAS A TEENAGER. I WASN’T A CHILD. ; THAT’S A KID. Kid adjacent.

; I was kid adjacent. I was a teenager about to become an adult. But, I remember just seeing the photos of her at the Academy Awards, and not not really knowing who she was or anything like that, because this was her first movie and her first big Oscar nomination. And she had like uh like a shimmery blue gown that was like really cute, and just by itself was very simple in front, like a slip dress.

But, then she had like a crocheted fringe, [snorts] like a button-up shawl that she put over the top of it. And she had her hair pinned up in like little ringlets, and I think she had like a little box purse. ; Oh my god, I know exactly what look you’re talking about. ; I’m talking about? Yeah, yeah. And she got ripped apart.

; Wait, that was And for the Oscars? ; That was her first Oscar nomination, her first, yeah. ; She looked so young then. ; yeah, I mean, it was over 20 years ago. But, that’s the thing, like now I think that’s such an iconic look. But, she still talks about the fact that everyone rips that look apart.

And she just remembers like looking seeing all the magazines and newspapers the next day with like worst dressed top of the list, Kate Hudson. And it was meant to be kind of like her big night. And so I kind of love now that she’s got her second nomination all these years later that she’s on the best dressed list, but also I kind of wish she just wore like she’d like kind of been like, “Fuck you, I’m going to wear another fringe vest and a box purse.

” And just like reclaimed it. ; Oh, that’s so cute. ; Wait, who else do you love? ; Okay, my absolute favorite um on this year’s red carpet was Chasten Buttigieg. ; Oh, yes. ; She’s wearing like a beautiful I want to say lilac, but on the lighter side of lilac. ; a almost like a white lilac like it’s so pale.

; And I think it suits her so much. It kind of gives like wedding dressy like the top half, but then it goes into this big like fluffy ruffle skirt at the bottom, but only on one side. ; Yes, I just feel like on anyone else this would have looked like a weird kind of prom dress. It is custom Louis Vuitton.

It’s really beautiful, but I think just the way she styled it cuz she’s got that real cool girl persona, right? ; cool. ; got the like beautiful long hair extensions in and just I think the ruffle looks so cool on her. ; And very like clean girl makeup. ; Yes, I think that’s what’s done it because I think like if she’d had like a a really like classy updo or something like that or like kind of like if they’d done like a bun or anything like that or a bob, it would have looked it would have aged her and it would have looked like a bit again too kind of too prom

; Yeah. ; formal. ; I really liked her overall styling. I feel like we’d seen in the past a lot of especially the younger um actors and actresses trying to look older for the Oscars and she just looks like she’s having so much fun with her look. She’s obviously in One Battle After Another.

I think she plays Leo’s daughter. ; Yeah, she does. ; So good. And this is the first time she’s been in a big picture and that big picture has been nominated, which is huge for her. Um we’re obviously going to talk about it tomorrow, but she did have a bit of a stage moment. And I love looking at the looks on the stage because they do look very different on the carpet.

; this is why that’s the hard thing with like a dress that photographs well to a dress that looks good in person to address that, films well. It’s like they’re actually so different. It’s so hard to find a dress that looks good in every kind of medium cuz there’s so many times like you would have seen it, too.

Like we’ve been at red carpet events with big celebs and they’re wearing a gown. You go, “Oh my god, that’s incredible.” And then you see the pictures afterwards and you’re like, “Oh, no wonder everyone’s like so lukewarm about it because the movement was the thing ; That’s so true. ; and it just didn’t photograph well.

This one That dress on her photographs well cuz she’s got the ruffles right at the front. ; It’s so pretty and I think perfect for an Oscars. ; Yes. Okay, someone else I wanted to give a little shout-out to is I mean this award hasn’t happened but I think it’s safe to say she’s probably won best actress.

If not, tomorrow’s pod is going to be a wild ride. ; She was on my list, too. ; Jessie Buckley. ; god, I love it. Bring back OG Glossier. ; Oh, [laughter] what? ; Cuz that’s that’s like OG Glossier colors. ; Oh, oh my god, I did not put that together. ; Red and pink. ; Red and pink. Yeah, so she’s wearing Chanel and she’s copped a bit of criticism for her looks over the award season because she has won Yeah, just from not so much from fashion people.

I think it’s more from like the general public because she’s worn a lot of She doesn’t tend to go that kind of like She doesn’t go like that super sexy. She doesn’t go super fashiony and she doesn’t even go simple. She’s just worn a lot of kind of like really like different silhouettes like with very kind of strange like cut-outs or pieces or volume and it’s all looked amazing.

But I think because she’s won everything, she’s been like so photographed and and a few of her looks people have pulled apart with like what the hell is she wearing. But I also just don’t think she cares. ; I don’t think she cares and I feel like from the looks I’ve seen in this award shows, I think what people really like is when someone looks good in one thing and then they stick with it and just do different variations of the same thing and she doesn’t do that.

; No, she wears a different silhouette all the time. She’s not Jennifer Lopez who’s like a J. Lo gown or nothing. So yes, it’s a custom Chanel. It’s got a beautiful off-the-shoulder red and then comes down into a beautiful like pale pink full skirt and ; Beautiful color color combination. ; classy as hell and I think it’s going to look beautiful when she walks up the stairs to get her Oscar, which she is going to. She’s 100% going to.

; All right, who else are we loving? ; Oh, okay, my turn. ; Yes. ; Um, okay. Local girl. You might know her, Rose Byrne. ; Yes. ; This gown is like if someone said the word Oscar to me and I closed my eyes, this is the look I picture. Like this for me is like the classic Oscars look. Like beautiful black gown, um, strapless, has like these beautiful floral prints going down it, hair back in a like a tight slicked back bun and like a big statement red lip.

I think she looks stunning. ; She does look incredible. It’s Christian Dior and when I did see it I just Underwhelmed isn’t the right word. I guess I just like she has she’s done a lot of classic kind of ; Underwhelmed? ; I just wanted I just I I maybe I just wanted her in like a full like a bright red trailing gown or something like that.

Obviously it’s a beautiful and I’m like so personally offended by this. It’s obvious it’s beautiful and she’s one of the people who is wearing more of a gown than like a straight column dress and she’s not a peplum in sight. So it’s like strapless, beautiful florals across, it’s black. I think it’s the black that originally threw me because she has worn some beautiful color but she got so much [ __ ] for wearing that green Chanel dress.

; I loved that dress. ; Me, too. This is sometimes I just don’t know what the fashion I don’t know what fashion girls what goes through their mind. But when I saw her wear that green dress to the Golden Globes, I thought she looked incredible and I loved her in that bright color and I was like I thought, “Oh my god, I hope she wears a bright color to the Oscars as well.

” And then everyone was like, “Oh my god, Chanel hates Rose Byrne so much for putting her in that dress.” Also, the fact that it’s like the fact that anyone thinks a design house who would like their whole business is like live or die on these actresses wearing these dresses, that they would put them in a bad dress because they hate them.

; Yeah, it’s not co-related at all. ; [laughter] ; IT’S LIKE WHAT EMMA THOMPSON DO. ; EXACTLY. Not someone at Chanel you know that I’m going to bring down the house of Chanel ; [laughter] ; because Rose Byrne looked at me weirdly. Or like that’s what they they thought that she they hated Margot Robbie and I was like they don’t hate Margot Robbie, they love her wearing their clothes.

It’s just like people aren’t loving the looks. But no no no no no no shade to Rose Byrne. Um and I think also the volume of the skirt with like the strapless and you know like the red lip, it is it’s so so so classic. I just I just wanted her to wear something so over the top. ; I know what it’s her big moment.

; She’s a big big 20 years build up for this moment. ; It is a big moment. Um I’m also glad that uh her husband ; Yes. ; was there cuz uh I guess there wasn’t a lizard convention. ; My god, she regrets saying that so much. And I was like girl don’t regret it. You gave us a beautiful moment. But now she’s been asked about it in every single interview.

And the other day she’s like, I just cannot speak on this anymore. And Bobby Cannavale has been asked cuz he’s been doing a lot of press too. All he gets asked about is that lizard. And he said the lizard sleeps on him. That’s like his down time during the day. And it’s named after Benson Boone. Which I quite Oh, you don’t Are you You don’t not like Benson Boone? Is that true? ; Yeah, get down from there.

; Oh. ; I’ve told [laughter] you I’ve told everyone I don’t like ; I love Benson Boone. ; think men should flip. ; [laughter] ; Okay. In general. ; if men can flip then they should they should. So we differ on that. ; I think if men can flip then they deserve a lizard after them. ; podcast for our red carpet analysis [laughter] and it’s us talking about a bearded dragon named Benson Boone.

; I was just thinking if your um wife was nominated for an award you should probably be there. But that’s just my opinion. ; I know but he I I also just think that she just kind of threw that out there but they didn’t think she was going to win and she’s been doing this whole award circuit. ; But she didn’t win.

; I know and that’s ; wasn’t there. ; I know. I think they’ll I think they’ll be okay. ; I hope so. ; Um all right, can I We have to talk about this young man. Let’s get it out of the way. ; Oh, no. I know who you’re going to talk about. ; You know Oh, do you? ; I thought we were going to skip him, honestly.

; No, we have to just give him a little shout out because he has done I mean, typically I don’t really care much for a man on the red carpet and some people like talk about the men. ; I’ve got one man, not him. ; Okay. ; But I’ll go after you. ; Timothée Chalamet wearing a all white suit with like a baggy pants and a little tie and these little tiny tiny little minuscule sunglasses and a whole bunch of silver rings on his hands.

; Yeah. ; Did you see that? ; Yeah. ; What’s our vibe? ; Um ill-fitted, I think. ; it’s meant to be baggy. ; I hope so. ; Well, he he turned up ; a Backstreet Boy. ; Honestly, the only thing I mostly care at the Oscars is who’s going to win best actor ; Yeah. ; because he’s either going to again cuz it at the time of recording we have not seen it.

He’s either going to die if he wins because then his whole life purpose has been realized and what will he do? Then he wants to probably beat Meryl Streep to become the most nominated actor of all time and most winning actor or he won’t win and he will also shrivel into Satan die. Either way, RIP Timothée. ; to win? ; I think so because I mean again, I don’t know but I I think all that stuff about the opera and the ballet and all that backlash and people like he’s lost his Oscar. Oscar voting closed before that.

; It was too late. ; So it wouldn’t have affected Also, the Oscars like the people the old white men who vote in this category, they don’t care about that. They have given Oscars to like men who are in the midst of like sexual assault allegations, all this sort of stuff. Like they don’t they don’t care and they don’t care.

They’re just like, “Oh no, he’s the best actor. We don’t care that he’s been investigated for sexual assault or anything like that.” So if they don’t care about that, they’re not going to care about him saying he doesn’t like the ballet. So that’s not like if he doesn’t win, that’s neither here nor there. ; Yeah, and also like the um interview happened before voting closed but I think it just got picked up after.

; Yes, like the actual backlash didn’t happen until everyone had sent in their ballots. So ; But then again, he didn’t win the SAG Award. ; Which is the biggest crossover so I don’t know. ; However, last year he won the SAG Award but didn’t win the Oscar. ; It’s sometimes so hard It’s [screaming] so hard to say.

Okay, we’ll have a whole episode on it tomorrow. But, um he wasn’t letting any of that get him down. He was swaggering along the red carpet. ; Jenner in ; Yes. ; red ; Schiaparelli ; Yeah, Schiaparelli. Fully red, very Kylie Jenner gown. ; I thought it was I actually really loved that for her because when she first started doing red carpets for him with him, she was wearing kind of like beautiful like gorgeous looks but they’re very kind of again basic black.

; low-key. She didn’t do red carpet. ; No, didn’t do the red carpet and she was very much like, “I’m I’m a plus one. I don’t want to take attention away from the movie or his co-stars and so I’m just going to like walk next to him in my black my black dress and be supportive.” But, I think now that she’s done so many red carpets, that now she’s kind of starting to like dress the way she wants to dress, which I actually love that for her.

And she’s sitting right next to him at the Oscars. I wonder if she’ll do that thing with his mom that they did last year where Kylie Jenner sits next to Timothy for the whole ceremony. ; swap with the mom. ; with his mom at the moment when his name’s about to be read out so that he can hug his mom first, which is very cute.

Um but, she’s yeah she’s wearing a very sexy cutout tight tight red dress with a very like messy long hair. ; it. Maybe she’s practicing for when she gets nominated next year for best supporting actress in [laughter] the moment. ; So good. ; To be honest, she was one of the best parts of that movie. I’m not angry about that. ; She was amazing.

I was blown like [laughter] I went to one of those like I saw it in one of those like Moonlight Cinemas. ; Yeah. ; And like it’s outdoors and then her scene came on and then it just went so silent including the bats and the birds. We were all locked [laughter] in together. ; flying and we were just like hovering like watching Kylie Jenner.

What’s going on here? We have not talked since we both saw that movie. But, I saw it in a I saw it in a screening of full of um Charli XCX fan girls and it let me tell you, brutal. ; Oh. ; No, no. Brutal is in like the the intensity of the fandom. ; god. ; I just like had to run with my glass of like dry white wine to my seat, like [laughter] stay there.

Cuz I was so scared of the cool girls, but yeah, loved Kylie Jenner. All right, who else are we who else are we loving? ; Okay, I want to move on to some feathers. ; Yeah, let’s do feathers. ; Cuz I have two feather looks that I loved. ; [laughter] ; My first one was Demi Moore. ; Okay, I freaking loved Demi Moore.

; stop staring at it. ; Nicole Kidman circa 10 years ago, but I don’t I love it. ; It Do you know what it reminds me of? So, it’s like a like bodice kind of dress with like these big black feathers from the top and like it goes into this dark feather gown. And in the middle, it’s like this scale kind of pattern.

; Incredible, yeah. All feathers at the top and like peacock type feathers almost with that beautiful blue green ; emeraldy color. ; scales and then a whole skirt of feathers. I think this might be one of my best dress looks. ; Yeah. ; And again, I’m sure You know why? Because it’s it’s basic [ __ ] red carpet.

It’s feathery, it’s pretty, it’s over the top, and that’s what I’m not here for like that’s this is why I couldn’t understand the beauty of Rose Byrne’s dress. I’m just not cultured enough. I’m not cultured enough to understand a classic cut dress. I want feathers, I want glitter, I want over the top. ; I also want to see her on stage if she ever gets on stage this ceremony.

; Yeah. ; Cuz I want to see I have a feeling that like bodice part like glistens with like spotlights on it. ; It’s like a drag It’s a like a dragon ; A dragon! ; It’s what it is. ; A dragon dress like a dragon griffin because it’s got feathers as well. Yeah. ; when a dragon’s about to grow up and lose its [laughter] feathers.

; Yeah, oh my god, it’s a baby dragon dress. ; Oh my god, I think we’ve just established something here. ; What’s that? ; It’s like in that What’s the movie she did? ; Oh, The Substance? The last one she did, yeah, yeah. ; It’s like the like the young thing like ; You what? ; is like in the middle ; Yeah.

; and then like the feathers is like the older part and like like that’s her growing. ; Yeah, that’s a ; I just nailed that. I can’t believe I just nailed that. ; yeah, let’s I let’s get someone on the phone from Gucci who designed the dress and just ask them. Um yeah, and her stylist is Brynn Gronkowski who that might might name might not mean anything to you, but he was the like one of the breakout stars from the Rachel Zoe project, who left after having like a big blowout thing with Rachel Zoe, and is now like like an amazing red carpet

stylist. And he’s one of her top clients, so. ; Okay, well. ; And I’m just like, oh, Rachel Zoe would have loved that dress, but she’d never see it ; [laughter] ; because of the feud. ; I wanted to quickly mention before we move on, um Jac O’Connell ; Oh, yes. ; Um he came with the vampire teeth. ; that so much.

; so real. Like it’s not like the fake vampire teeth that we use. But that’s please use ; Wait, you’ve got you’ve got you’ve got fake vampire teeth around? ; Yeah, for Halloween. You never know when you’re going to need fake vampire ; Yeah. We should have done our Sinners episode the other day with vampire teeth in.

That would have looked that would have so amazing for let’s redo it right now. Would have done so amazing for the pod. Can I just say, I think he was actually the sexiest man on the red carpet because of those he he walked down the red carpet looking you know, hot as hell cuz he is, but like a normal man hot, and then he glinted his little fake vampire teeth, and I was like, best dressed.

; Best [laughter] dressed. ; Best dressed. ; Give him the Oscar. Best lady. ; Yeah, exactly. Love that. Okay, who else who else are we loving? ; Um I also wanted to shout out Teyana Taylor for her feathery gown. ; Yes. ; So it’s a black and white piece. Um it’s a bit transparent. So it has like a bit of a crop top moment and then like this sheer mesh black like on the bodice and then goes on to this like long skirt with a big trail.

I’ve also been seeing a lot of trails, which I like. ; Trains. What’s the difference? What’s a trail? ; I don’t know what a I don’t think dress I don’t think trail is a fashion word. A trail is like what you walk up a mountain. A dress the train of a dress is what pulls behind the dress. ; whole life.

I’ve definitely been saying trail on this podcast. ; me [laughter] stop you. ; I’m so sorry. No trails are being seen. These guys aren’t walking up mountains. I wanted to be clear. ; I mean, look, don’t let me stop you had the way you want to talk. [laughter] I’m not here to like school anyone on how to talk about fashion, so yeah. ; a train.

; Yeah. ; Um and is it called a train because it the kind of like follows? ; I don’t know the origin of why um addresses have trains, but I guess because it’s [laughter] it’s ; Someone got nothing to wear on here. ; We’re about to get kicked out of here because they’re like you guys don’t know anything.

I’m assuming that it’s called the train because it it like yeah it pulls behind like a train pulls behind the dress, but yeah so it’s beautiful black and white. It’s Chanel. Um and it just looks like I just want to go and like I mean I would get arrested, but it would be worth it. I just want to go over to her and like run my hands over it.

It’s like this beautiful thick intense fabric and the way it spread out behind her on the red carpet looks like a little carpet behind her. ; Yeah. ; Cuz it’s not a long train such trail. It’s like a circular train. ; I love it and I and it like moved so well when she walked and it looks also like a party dress. ; Can I just say again I was a little I was a start. Emily, come on now.

I was a little underwhelmed only because she looks amazing with with it with Tiana Train’s dress. ; What do you mean? ; No no no no. She looks Okay, she looks incredible, but she has had these really stand out kind of quirky looks quirky sexy looks all through awards season where she you know she’s had some wins and she’s been nominated and she’s had viral moments and she remember when she had like the little diamante like G-string poking out? ; Remember when she had the dress she turned around when she got her award?

; and stuff and it was just so chic and fun and interesting. It was like making fashion fun and interesting again and she was the only one who was doing something fun like that and then she had the dress remember where it was like sculpt up into fake boobs? ; Yeah, I love that. ; And that looks that was incredible too.

So and I said at the time I said I hope her stylist doesn’t get cold feet the last moment and stop cuz the thing is a good Oscar ; this is fun? ; No, I do think this is fun. I just think that I just wish she’d worn this to like the SAGs or something or or the BAFTAs. I just wish that she’d gone The thing is, a really good Oscar dress run is like if you you have a specific look that you wear to all the awards ceremonies, and you up the ante every time, culminating in a very over-the-top Oscars look.

So, I just wish that we had seen her cuz this is almost like a progression back into safe fashion. And I know no one wants to put a foot wrong at the Oscars. No one wants to like look like they didn’t understand the dress code, but I just think that Teyana Taylor is above that cuz she’s such a cool girl, and she’s such a fashionista.

And look, I’m I’m sure there’s also a world where she tried this dress on, and she loved it so much that she was like, “This is what I’m wearing to the Oscars.” But, I also think there’s a world where she had all these other fun dresses, and she wore them to the other ceremonies, and then she went very safe for the Oscars.

And I’m so interested to see what her after-party dress is like because I often I think for her, especially, her after-party dress will be what she would have worn to the Oscars if she wasn’t uh worried about the dress code. ; Interesting. ; That’s all I’m saying. So, I’m not saying she looks bad at all.

I’m just saying that after the build-up ; more risk. ; After the build-up, I find this dress a little underwhelming. That’s all I’ll say. ; Well, you hate my choices. ; I don’t hate your choices. I love the the trail of her dress and the ; [laughter] ; Okay. ; the vibe of it. Is there anyone you didn’t like? You’ve only got people you liked.

; Oh, yeah. ; Okay. Besides men. But, I The thing is, I think that you just I think that you just like the men, not their outfits. [laughter] ; Um I wasn’t too crash hot on Mia Goth’s look. ; Oh. I don’t know if I saw that one. ; It’s like a if you were wearing a bridal gown, and then you ripped it off you.

; Oh, love. ; Which actually, that sounds pretty cool. ; [laughter] ; I don’t think it looks that cool. ; It sounds cooler than it should have been. ; It It looks cool on her cuz she’s Mia Goth. So, if anyone else wore it, I would have been a bit like, “Oh, no.” But, I actually don’t like It just looks a bit messy.

Here, I’ll show you a photo. ; Okay. ; You’ve seen it. ; Oh, yes. Yes, I did see that. Yeah, it just I mean, to me that’s just a kind of classic Mia Goth look and it didn’t stand out that much at all. ; out for me. Okay, I want to know your opinion on Anne Hathaway’s look. ; Um ; It reminded me of Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala that one time when she was pregnant.

; Yeah, I have ; Like that whole like ; Oh, no, I know exactly the dress you’re talking about. When she was the first time that she went to the Met Gala when she was pregnant with North West and she and everyone said that she looked like a couch, including Robin Williams and then she went home and cried.

And now we can all agree she actually looked amazing. ; Yeah, I liked it. ; I was very conflicted about this Anne Hathaway look because here’s the thing, Anne Hathaway in her heart, I feel like she and I are the same person in the fact that she’s just a little bit of a try-hard theater kid who wants to like ; Aw. ; is sometimes a bit over the top, but I love her for that.

Like I I I just I I recognize my tendencies in her and she also loves a basic [ __ ] princess dress for the red carpet, which is what I love as well. And so she has worn some of my favorite red carpet looks of all time. Do you remember when she went to Oscars one year and she wore that beautiful red gown with the big floral coming over her shoulder and it was just such an iconic ; Yeah.

; moment and when she hosted the Oscars and like all of her dresses with the burgundy gown she wore and then she wore that beautiful red dress to walk the red carpet and I just like oh, when she wore like the blue shimmery gown to the Golden Globes. Like I love all when she wore ; [laughter] ; Okay. I don’t know any of the designers.

I just again remember what looking at the pictures like that beautiful long-sleeved like fitted brown gown and all the sequins. Like she has just worn so many of my favorite looks. So when I saw her in this, so ; [snorts] ; she looks beautiful. So it’s a strapless long gown coming into like a mer- like a very mermaid-y, probably the most mermai- mermaid-y dress there.

; J. Lo’s like get me that stylist. ; Yeah, J. Lo like rooks runs up behind her and rips the dress off her and she’s like give me back my stiletto. Um and it’s this beautiful white and cream pale pink floral against the black and she’s got elbow length gloves and a ; belt. ; Oh my gosh, yes, I didn’t even see the belt.

A big flowery belt around her waist and her hair pulled back and she’s got the beautiful ; back but like poof. ; Yeah. ; Like back into the 80s. She’s wearing like a quiff. ; Yeah. ; Oh my god, I used to rock a quiff so hard. ; [laughter] ; Did you? ; Yeah, every day. Every day in high school I did a little I teased the top and pinned it and then I’d do a ponytail at the back.

I don’t bring it back. ; Bring it back. ; I’ll quiff my hair tomorrow and like I’ll show you how to do it. ; Do you have a fringe? ; Yeah. Oh my god, I didn’t have a fringe then. So I don’t know if you can quiff [laughter] and do a fringe, can you? ; I think you can. ; Our YouTube gets shut down for bad hair.

; [laughter] ; Um yeah, and so why I was conflicted is like it’s a beautiful look. It looks so polished and elegant, but it is not what I’ve come to expect for Anne Hathaway. ; I didn’t know how I actually felt about it because it it looks nice, but I just felt a bit mm bored. ; I mean, it’s the dramatic train and the dramatic like cutout and everything looks incredible.

And I did watch a video of it going down the red carpet cuz I’m like, I don’t want to be disappointed in her without having all the information. Cuz you know, we we go back a long way being like the same We’ve got the same Yeah, we’ve got the same annoying tendencies. Like I will also one day be canceled for being too intense and sincere the way she was. Um love her so much.

; [laughter] ; What did she say? Karma. Karma. Um I mean, what’s Where’s the lie? She was just trying to get She’s like, I will get you. I will stand here. If anyone’s seen that viral video where she gets out of the car, it’s like the anti-chapel room where she’s like so calm and kind, but also like boundaries.

; She’s like she’s taming a horse. ; She’s like, I cannot talk to all of you, but I will stand here. Karma. And you may take a photo of me. Calm. Karma. Karma. ; [laughter] ; Why aren’t we I’m like, why aren’t we all using karma in our everyday? Actually, I just feel I felt very soothed as soon as she said it.

So I watched a video anyway of her going to the red carpet cuz I don’t want to have beef with her without getting all the information. And the movement of the dress is incredible. And I also understand that she’s probably like, I’m not nominated this year. It’s not my night.

So a lot of actresses, if they’re not nominated, don’t want to wear the big dresses. It’s very political. ; Yeah, okay. One person that I wish just I knew she would dress exactly like this, but I just wish she would have surprised us, Gwyneth Paltrow. ; Oh, and the classic white. ; She’s so Goop. ; She’s so ; I know, but the thing is the thing with Gwyneth is like I think everyone always thinks like, oh she’s yeah, she is so Goop.

She just wears the um you know, the whites and the creams and the pale outfits. But she has had some crazy Oscar looks over the year. ; Exactly, which is why I was like, you’re back in the Oscars. Give me a classic Gwyneth look. ; I know. I loved if she would have cuz she is the epitome of like can pull off a really ugly dress.

And I wish I wish she’d worn an ugly dress. I mean, when she won her first Academy Award, let us not forget the pink poofy princess dress that um I guess like styling which is very different at the time. Bring it back. Like no one had fitted the corset, so it just looked crazy. Um but again, is a classic like people remember that dress.

But my favorite one was when she wore the see-through mesh like she went goth. ; Oh, when was that? ; Interesting, yeah. Pull the photo up. Um interesting to do goth once in your life at the Oscars when you’re Gwyneth Paltrow. ; [laughter] ; Like to take a big swing that one year and people were like, oh my god, she looks so crazy.

Like that’s such an ugly dress. She should have worn a bra. And I was like, let let her go. Are you seeing it now for the first time? ; Incredible. ; Isn’t that This is what I wanted. ; This is what I wanted for this year. ; Yeah, the black skirt like a rumpled black skirt, a see-through bodice, like no bra at all.

Not but also not no bra, no boning or structure in the top. ; Yeah. ; And just and a smoky eye and like no lipstick. ; smoky eye that’s like smudged at the bottom. ; Yeah, but not even like makeup smudge like as in like I did this in the car smudge. ; Exactly. Oh, and the little braid coming from the Oh yeah. ; This is what I mean.

Bring back personal style on the red carpet. I wish Gwyneth Paltrow had showed up goth tonight. That was my dream for her. And I feel like she just let the team down by not doing that. ; Okay, the one look that I absolutely must talk about. ; Yes. ; Chloé Zhao. ; Oh, my god. Chloé Zhao. ; Oh, my god. ; And again, I did not know how she’s how she was going to go.

So, Chloé Zhao, the director of Hamnet, which is nominated for multiple things and the only woman who’s nominated for best director. ; Yeah. ; So, yeah. All eyes are on her because she’s in a field of her own. She’s Yeah, not really. ; Aw. ; No, no, no. She’s been winning in our minds at home. ; Oh, the one that I love is another guy who’s been winning.

; Yeah. ; PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON. ; [laughter] ; SORRY. ; I LOVE This is the only pod We’re such an anti like bro podcast. I love I love that man. ; [laughter] ; I love This is the only podcast we’d be like, “Oh, that man.” And not Chloé Zhao who is like our queen. So, love her. [laughter] ; I’m glad like I like that she is a director and she’s also like, “You know what? I’m going to rock this red carpet and she’s ; She’s won a few Sometimes she goes a bit more kind of laid-back for award shows.

Sometimes she’s wear like she has worn like full-on like ; She goes very like ethereal. ; Yes. Like incredible. And yeah, so she’s wearing this beautiful black gown with like not not ruffled but like very textured full skirt. ; It reminds me of Wuthering Heights. ; Oh, yeah. And it’s got the big bell sleeves.

It’s very Wuthering Heights and the veil. ; veil. ; god. Okay, we’ll talk We guys, we couldn’t I know like 50,000 I mean, not 50. 32 spillers have messaged me just today about this news and we can’t talk about it today. We’ll talk about it in a later podcast, but I know she already had this look planned, but do you think she’s in mourning because her Buffy reboot got canceled? And do you think that maybe ; bring this up today.

; I mean, please don’t. I can’t I can’t actually can’t talk about this. ; I think between you about Buffy and me about Michael B. Jordan, it wouldn’t have been the ; [laughter] ; The whole pod’s just us crying. And I have such complex thoughts on that, but I just I just went when I saw her and I was like, she’s in mourning.

; She’s in mourning. ; But I don’t think I again, she would have had this picked months ago. And I think it’s meant to be like very kind of mysterious. ; Maybe she just added the veil as a last minute. [laughter] ; Maybe she had a beautiful like pink gown ready to go, and then she looked at it and she was like, I cannot, and puts the veil on and just like came out.

; god. ; I know, it’s a lot, but she looks at the sleeves, let me tell you, like ; It looks amazing. ; Oh, incredible. I have I haven’t I watched the videos of her going down the red carpet again just to see. I didn’t see her do a twirl, but if I was her, I would have had my arms Like Maria in Sound of Music, just twirling around with my ruffly skirt and my fellow sleeves going everywhere.

; And then she would have had a trail cuz she had to climb up all those steps. ; [laughter] ; I love that we’re just still learning new things about each other as well. I’ve never heard you say that before. ; something new every day. Learn something new every day. [laughter] ; Um okay, we didn’t really have any scandalous looks.

; No, which is kind of annoying. ; Where was Kristen Stewart in her hot pants or something [laughter] in a little booty shorts? I mean, again, people like don’t wear that to the Oscars. And I was like, but we also like the Oscars also need some controversial looks. ; Exactly. I need Someone needs to take one for the team.

; Someone needs to pull a share and like wear an incredible headdress and have their whole midriff out. Well, someone did have their midriff out. And then there’s our friend Gracie Abrams. I say friend, we’ve never met, we just like her. ; Gracie Abrams. ; Have you seen her look? ; I did.

I saw her I didn’t see like actually a frontal picture of her. I’ve seen her with Paul Mescal. ; to to show you. ; Oh, yeah. ; So, she’s got a black ; looks like something I would wear on my 21st birthday. ; Yeah, no, no, 100% it does. She’s like, just so you guys know, I’m young. ; [laughter] ; I’m cool.

I’m a young cool girl, and you know what, where’s the lie? So, she’s got a scarf around her neck, what could only be described as uh maybe an adjustable spaghetti strap, maybe not adjustable, maybe it’s just the texture, but a spaghetti strap nonetheless. ; Yeah. ; A beautiful black sequined um top that is showing off her full midriff, and then going down into a full black skirt with a tiny little train / trail coming out the back of it.

But, what do we think of having a midriff out of the Oscars? I I love it. ; I like it. I don’t think I don’t know. Like, is anyone even looking at her? Like, she’s not really part of the whole ; No, well, she’s there as Paul Mescal’s plus one. ; Yes, but he’s also not nominated. ; No, no, no, but he’s in a very nominated movie and her They were actually very cute because they had they made their red carpet debut as a couple at the BAFTAs.

Remember that? ; remember that. ; And they and she kissed him on the cheek and they were like ; hugging and kissing and they were like ; her BAFTAs dress to this one. ; Yes, yes. It’s one of those I almost think like if you’re going to take a risk, go even further ; Yeah. ; than having a midriff out, but you know. ; a Kylie Jenner, I say.

; Yeah, where Have you Have your boobs out. ; Yeah. ; And I kind of But, it was really cute because they were walking down like the big runway because the Oscars is in like a big theater, but it’s also attached to a mall. ; Interesting. ; This is the thing about premieres. It’s like when we go to ; Yeah, people don’t see what we see.

[laughter] ; It’s just outside they’re so Premieres or award shows outside they’re not so unglamorous in some ways. It’s like when you used to ; Friday was IN BONDI JUNCTION. ; [laughter] ; THAT’S SO WEIRD. And me and Tina Barrack were just standing on the escalator. ; With like people literally shopping in Target next door.

; I know. It’s like Target and then the Freaky Friday premiere. ; Well, that’s like when they used to have all They don’t have them there anymore. They used to have all the big premieres when I first started in entertainment journalism in Sydney at the Event Cinemas across the road from where our office is now.

; Yes. ; So, the red carpet was as you walked in, which means I did all my biggest red carpet interviews in front of that Hungry Jack’s. ; With the people cuz you can’t close the Hungry Jack’s. ; No. ; With the people just eating their burgers looking shell-shocked at me while I’m interviewing like ; [laughter] ; all these huge celebrities.

And the celebrities aren’t making eye contact with me cuz they’re looking over my shoulder into the Hungry Jack’s. ; Yeah, because I haven’t eaten. ; [laughter] ; They’re probably thinking, “Oh, after this I’m getting some of that.” Um so, we don’t have a red carpet there anymore because I think they were like, “This is a bit weird.

” Or there’s that like fun chicken shop on the other side where you can get like ; really good. ; Yeah, but again like everyone’s walking past with these big skewer kebabs through the red carpet. ; And also it’s like in the CBD so there’s also like so many tourists at that cinema just like what’s going on? ; [laughter] ; So the Oscars is attached to a mall which I find quite funny.

Yeah, so you have all the passersby but also you can line up to be fans along the barrier like we see people lining up for premieres like 24 hours 48 hours beforehand and so a lot of celebs were going over to the barrier and talking to fans. ; I thought it was really cute. Nice. ; Timothy I mean the thing is I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He kind of ran past really quickly and he got one of the biggest yells. Potentially he went and circled back and I just didn’t see that in the footage cuz you know there’s so much footage. Nicole Kidman went along the line in her feathery white two-piece. ; in feathers? Yeah. ; Everyone’s got a feather Oh man I really hope for this premiere ; had feathers like in that that blazer she wore.

Feathers are so here. I love us like finding a trend. ; [laughter] ; And they’ve got feathers and they were wearing feathers. ; and that’s all we’ll say on that. Nicole Kidman went along the line ; And she was taking people’s phones off them to take selfies. ; Gorgeous. ; And I’m just like that Nicole Kidman doesn’t have to do that.

But it back to Gracie and Paul which is why I brought it up is that they were walking along the barrier past the shopping center into the Oscars. ; Nice. ; And Paul always just looks like he’s like his goofy little self. He’s like all just like hey. It’s like when I looked at my window once and saw him at the pub across the road.

He also looked really goofy and out of place and he looks the same. ; Yeah. ; You like that story? ; No I just hated I hated that. ; I don’t call you at 2:00 a.m. and tell you to start running. ; You would have. [laughter] That’s my issue. I literally would have. ; You would have heard beeping sirens through the city as you like charged through the crowd. Yeah.

; [laughter] ; On the tram lines. ; To meet Paul. He’s like I went to this little pub so no one would bother me and this weird woman see me out her window and called her friend to come over. ; at the Gladiator premiere. ; [laughter] ; So oh my god he looked the most scared at the Gladiator premiere. ; That’s the closest I’ve been to him like face to face.

I think I was most scared of him at the Gladiator premiere. ; Oh cuz he looked really tired and sweaty. It was hot in there. It was really hot. That was not a fun event. Anyway, this whole podcast has been off the rails. He was walking on the He was walking on the barrier going into the Oscars and he looked really like sort of nervous and everyone and Grace is walking next to him and she’s just so like confident and like had her head up smiling and waving and just like obviously she’s the daughter of a very famous director and she’s been in Hollywood and like in that

time all her life. So, she is like not, you know, she’s not shy around like that sort of stuff. She was just like happy to be there. Um and then all the girls, mostly like girls who probably lined up for days to be on the front row of that barrier was screaming for Paul and he kind of like he looked over and smiled but he didn’t know I think he just didn’t know what to do.

He was so like kind of and they didn’t have a handler. I’m like where’s your handler? Like they were just walking by themselves. And so they’re going Paul, please Paul, please. ; [laughter] ; And then the girls that some of the girls must have been like this this is a girl-to-girl problem. They’re like Gracie, please.

And so she Gracie runs over she grabs Paul and pulls him pulled him over to the barrier. She like kind of steered him over from was like you need to go like talk to these fans. And he’s just like there like yeah a girl’s got an ultimate girl’s girl. She’s like oh these girls have been standing here and they need to see my hot boyfriend and it’s my job to get over there.

Love that for them. ; Oh yeah, I really like them as a couple. I loved on the red carpet um him just like staring at her while she got her photos done cuz I felt like he had to do that to combat the ; [laughter] ; Daisy Edgar Jones rumors. ; Oh yeah, no, they’re just best friends. I think he and Grace are going to get married. I hope so.

Okay, can we do a few more quick fire ones of ones that I just quite loved? ; Okay, I just want to give one more shoutout to someone who’s on my best dressed list. ; Wunmi Mosaku from Yeah. ; Yes. Oh my god, I’m so glad. It’s like a teal not teal like an aqua sequins. ; Yeah, like a deep green full sequins.

This is This is what I want. This is all I want. Bright color and some sequins. This girl knows. It was yeah and she’s holding her beautiful like pregnant stomach and just looking with the And it’s got the It’s got the cutout on one side, the sweeping one shoulder dress. ; thought she looked like at the Met Gala. ; [laughter] ; This is I know again, Kim looked good as well, but when Me just looks so incredible.

And she’s also I don’t feel like she got like nervous last minute about like like not being like like sophisticated enough for the Oscars or anything like that. ; nominated as well. ; Yeah, she was nominated. I wish she could have won. I’m very happy I’m not talking about winners, but we did see one or two before we came. But I also she has said this movie has like changed her life and the nomination has changed her life in a way.

And so I’ve got to hope that she’ll get an Oscar. Like this is not her first She’ll get nominated again. ; Yeah. ; But I just feel like she just looked at that full green bright sequined dress and is like that is what I’m giving you. ; walked the carpet and the light would like make the dress just reflecting off it. Oh.

; Love. Love. ; such a good call. ; A lot of A lot of the young girls wearing young girls some they’re like in their 30s ; [laughter] ; mid-30s Emma Stone. Elle Fanning is in her 20s. Anyone who like everyone’s a young girl at heart. A lot of just like white. Like classic So Elle Fanning is wearing her first nomination wearing a beautiful princessy gown, but almost I again I love a princessy gown.

I wish this wasn’t white. ; Why? She looks very nice in ; No, she does look great in white. I mean I always think that I I can’t wear white unless I’ve got like 50 layers of fake tan like and like pulling around my elbows like I have now. ; I know what you mean. ; [laughter] ; That I can’t wear white and she just got her beautiful porcelain skin against the white.

And it’s nice to be a Fanning sister. They’re the only ones who can do that. I know I love it. Again, it’s it should This is why I don’t know what’s wrong with me that I don’t like Elle Fanning’s dress because it ticks every one of my basic [ __ ] boxes. It’s a full princessy gown. ; think it’s because she always does that? ; It’s got sparkles.

No, I just think ; Like she always wears like a princessy gown and like pale colors. ; I I wish maybe I think I just wish it had been like a very bright color. ; Yeah, right. ; I just think like it it’s kind of ; It sounds like you just wanted a lot of color this year. ; Maybe. I always just want a lot of color.

I know I often wear basic [ __ ] black, but I’m a nobody. Like the celebs I think should be wearing I would just be getting I know there’s a lot of politics. I know like a lot of the time you don’t get to choose your dress. I only that’s the interesting thing is like I love reading like the red carpet stylist talk about cuz I think they get very frustrated too because they’re like people don’t understand how limited we are of like which design house our client has a deal with, who like gets the like dresses are put on hold for specific people. Like it’s

only a very tiny handful of A-list stars. And not even who’s nominated cuz you can be nominated but not have like a lot of red carpet pull and someone who’s not nominated can have more pull over you. So it’s very political. So it’s only a tiny number this is what I was trying to remember in my head. It’s a tiny number of people who get to choose their dress.

Most people get us give it’s like what you get given or what it’s what you or your stylist can pull options for you but they can’t pull everything. Because there’s dresses on hold, there’s you know other things that you’re allowed not allowed to wear ; Unless you’re J. Lo. ; Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can just ; [laughter] ; every Met Gala dress goes to her.

So no, I love Elle’s silvery white gown. And again, I love that she did a full skirt in a princessy look. I just almost wish that she had worn like we know we’ve seen her at the Met Gala. We know she can do over over the top glamour. ; Yeah. ; I wish she’d done that. Like that crystal gown she wore last year or something.

I feel like if anyone was going to go princessy high fashion, it was her. And she went very safe. And again, I’m so excited to see her after-party dress cuz I feel like that’s ; I know. Bring on the after-party. ; just love to I would love to see what everyone would have actually liked to have worn. Um and also Emma Stone of course she has to wear Louis Vuitton because she’s an ambassador.

But she just looks so she’s got a little bob and she’s just got it’s it’s a straight down column dress. So simple. It’s probably one of like her and Gwyneth are two most kind of simple dresses. Little cap sleeves in like a white kind of cream. And I Again, it’s kind of a bit dull. Well, she’s kind of doing what she’s been doing this whole um award season, right? Where she’s like um yeah, Begonia’s nominated, I’m nominated, but let’s pretend I’m not.

She’s Yeah, she’s had a very casual season, and I almost love that I mean casual in all her Louis Vuitton gowns. Um I always love that for her cuz she’s kind of in a good spot um in terms of like stress-wise, I would say because she’s nominated, so she gets to do all the you know, the luncheons and the events and all that sort of stuff and wear the pretty dresses, but she’s won twice before.

So, I mean obviously you want to win again, but like that huge pressure is off. She’s already a two-time Oscar winner at a very young age. And she doesn’t expect to win, so she’s not expecting to get up on stage and have her dress break and do like a crazy speech like she did in the last couple of years.

And so, she’s just there with her like handsome, tall writer husband just like walking down red carpet in her pretty dresses and seeing her friends and being like, “I’m nominated. I’m supporting the movie, but I don’t have to actually have to get up on stage or do anything. I don’t have to go back and do the press line after the awards.

I don’t have to go and do like all the different interviews afterwards. I’m just here to have a drink.” ; Yeah. ; Pretty much. And I’m like that’s actually a lovely place to be in. If that was me, I would also be just wearing a white column gown and ; Yeah. ; flats, maybe. ; And then ripping it off the minute you get home.

; Exactly, and just partying. So, I guess I mean look, we could do another 6 hours on this pod, but um we won’t, but that’s the the Oscars red carpet for 2026. ; god. And then tomorrow’s the day. ; Tomorrow Yes, tomorrow we are doing a full ceremony recap. ; just gone like silent cuz I’m so nervous.

[laughter] ; You’re so nervous about Michael B. Jordan’s chances. I’m so pleased. The stakes have never been higher than this year. Like this is the highest they’ve been. ; all that like good energy towards Michael B. Jordan. ; Oh my god. ; I don’t know that everyone who’s listening to this is everyone who’s recently [laughter] like in charge of him winning.

; No, I know, but I feel like we really have been like ; We’ve really been pushing Sinners. ; We’ve really been like like you know, shining the torch for this film since the moment we saw it. So, we do feel personally invested. [laughter] Um and the weird thing is that everyone listening to this pod now knows the answer to this question.

; EMBARRASSING FOR ME. ; [laughter] ; WELL, JUST so you guys know, tomorrow Em’s Em and I podcast tomorrow about the Oscars. There’s going to be Someone’s definitely going to cry. I don’t know which one of us it’s going to be, but ; Oh, yeah. ; Either way, I’m crying. ; Yeah.

Okay, well, it’s going to be you then. ; [laughter]
