So, a very notable press tour is coming to an end. Well, this week, I think maybe have one or two events, which is Zendaya and Rob Pattinson, our new favorite acting duo, because the drama is coming up this week. I feel like we’ve been talking about this movie for such a long time. ; I know, I feel like I saw the trailer for this literally an age ago, and I’m so excited to watch it.
I know you’ve seen it. I haven’t yet. I’m avoiding spoilers at all costs. ; Oh, yeah, I would say as much as you can, everyone. Don’t like don’t look at anything, don’t open links, don’t watch videos, don’t search for it. Don’t respond to your friends this week, because who knows what they’ve seen. ; I have it So many people have said to me, “Just tell me the twist.
” And I’ve told no one. No, cuz you can’t I don’t like when people want to spoil A, just cuz I had to sign an NDA in blood to be able to see the movie. And so, I haven’t even told my friends who’ve asked me what the twist is. ; And also, just for the good of art. That’s like what people experience that. Well, exactly.
I’m like, yeah, you have to go into like with an open mind. So, the press tour has been winding down, and I think overall it’s been very successful for Zendaya and Rob, until this week. But, we’ll get to that in a moment. So, obviously with Zendaya, uh she was in an interesting spot, because it’s % sure that she has married Tom Holland.
Is kind of the vibe we’re getting, or they’re going to get married soon. But, I kind of do think the wedding has happened. What do you think? Do you think Law Roach was telling the truth? I think so, because I don’t really see the reason to lie. Yeah, I mean, no, he would he would just lie for some headlines. Like, he just loves to mess with reporters and say stuff like that.
; what Zendaya’s vibe on that would be. Or, she’d be like, “Just go for your life. Do whatever you want.” But, I reckon they are married. ; But, also Zendaya’s mom shared the clip of Law Roach saying that, but with a laughing face. Was she Was she laughing because like, “Haha, we kept the wedding secret.
” Or, was she laughing like, “Haha, this man’s being crazy. They’re not married.” Or, is it like, “Haha, you’ll never know.” Well, [laughter] I actually think it’s that one. Cuz, the thing is, we actually will never know. I don’t imagine them ever coming out and saying like, Unless they do get married at a later date, and somehow photos from that get leaked.
That would be the only way I would think. I think they’re so private, we’re never Like, they’re so careful with that sort of stuff. As we say with celebrities, like if you don’t want stuff to get leaked, most of the time you can stop it. But, um she actually I thought she did like a really interesting She’s so well media trained, and so kind of just across what she needs to say, because she walked so many red carpets, and did so many events, and talked to so many journalists, who were all asking her very like veiled wedding questions. Like, obviously cuz she plays
a bride in the movie, but they were all trying to get information, even though they would have been told no questions about the wedding. So, they had to sort of like ask her like, “Oh, I’m getting married soon. What advice do you have for me?” And she was so quick, she’s always like, “Well, as Emma,” who’s like her character in the movie, “I would say, blah blah blah.
” So, that she didn’t allude to anything. I know, I feel like the closest she got was talking about marriage and things like that very conceptually. So, she did say, like the closest I saw her get to where it sort of sounded like she was talking about herself was how she thinks, you know, you really need people who seem like best friends.
It’s always nice to see two people who like each other as much as they love each other. But, it’s still very top level. ; that she linked to the movie, cuz she says, “As Emma.” Like, that’s what she Cuz, even obviously people would still run with that about her trying to give something about her relationship. But, yeah, it was um it was an interesting way to do it.
And also, maybe her getting married also ups the ante with people being like desperate to look at her premiere outfits, and desperate to hear what she had to say. And the premiere rollout with the dresses was really interesting, cuz obviously she’s such a theme dresser. Her and Law Roach are really big on doing that for all her red carpets, and like pulling out these looks.
And prior to coming into this press tour, I did wonder if like, is she just going to wear like a different wedding style dress to each one? But, obviously they’re smarter than that. So, the first one was something old, which was her original Oscar’s dress. Something new, which was I think a custom Louis Vuitton gown. Something borrowed, which was Cate Blanchett’s luck dress that she has re-worn multiple times on the red carpet, and she borrowed it directly from Cate Blanchett, cuz she owns it.
And then, I think there’s some more red carpet to go, so it should be something blue. I know, I’m excited to see what it is. I really like that theme. I think it’s so much more interesting than just doing various versions of wedding dresses or things like that. ; is why I’m not a stylist. I mean, there’s many [laughter] reasons, but I would have just been like, “Hey, let’s just wear a wedding dress to each one.

The other interesting thing while she is walking red carpets, looking so chic in her borrowed new and something borrowed, something blue kind of looks, is that she’s with Robert Pattinson, who just on a press tour is a really something to behold. He is a wild little nugget.
I mean, we’ve talked about how he just lies. Yeah. The thing is, like Zendaya did say as they were starting their press tour, I talked to her host said to her like, “You know Rob’s a compulsive liar.” And she was like, “Yeah, I know.” ; [laughter] ; She’s probably just sitting there like, “Okay, Rob.
” Like, the number of things he’s lied about We obviously all know about how he talked about when he was doing Water for Elephants, the press tour, that he saw a clown die in a car collision [laughter] when he went to the circus. And then at a later date, he was like, “Nah, that was completely fabricated. I just had no fabricated. ; He’s like, “I’ve just never been to the circus. I just made something up.
” I’m like, “You got to stick to the lie, Rob.” No, it’s so funny how years later he just distances himself from the lie. Yeah, they’re like, “Have you been to the circus?” He’s like, “Yeah, the clown died. Like, the little car exploded.” ; [laughter] ; And also, like lying about not washing his hair, which might have been true.
Remember he said he was expelled from school for um his helping to save snails. But, his Wikipedia’s page says he was expelled from school for stealing porno magazines. What’s the truth? I know. And then he’s got really random ones that he was a women’s hand model for jewelry, because he has really androgynous hands.
He also said that he sold sawdust as drugs at school. [laughter] I’m like, “Did any Did anything this man say I think his mom was a talent agent, like a modeling agent. So, he might have been doing some hand modeling. But, he yeah, he always has like something ready to go. Remember when he did that interview with the with a journalist that went for like nearly two days, and he was saying that he was trying to invent a pasta.
; Do you remember this? It was like the pasta burger or something like that. ; burger, but you could eat pasta like straight from your hands. ; And he was like, “It’s such a great idea.” Yeah, he was like, “You know how you can just grab a burger and run down the road and eat it?” And he’s like, “That’s what we need to do with pasta.
We need a pasta you can grab and just eat from your hands.” And then his microwave exploded during the interview. I think we need that. ; Rob Pattinson. [laughter] I really liked when he told Jennifer Lopez in that Variety Actors on Actors that he is dying to be in a ballet movie, cuz he feels like there’s a ballerina living inside of him.
Yeah, and he also He thinks he smells like a crayon. ; [laughter] ; I think he has looked crayon-like in this press tour. Something about his face Yeah, he does look crayon-like. That’s so true. What did you think about his recent one of like, “No one was Team Jacob. That was a marketing tool.” Uh as you know, I have very strong feelings about this.
; you cuz you’re such a Twilight girl. ; Listen to our brutally honest review of [laughter] Twilight, because we did one for the th anniversary. I’ve always said, and you said this is the worst thing I’ve ever told you, that my mind was with Edward, and my body was with Jacob.
Cuz, I think that was So, I don’t know if he’s just playing I I see what he means. Like, Edward was always the choice, but he can’t deny Jacob was hot. Yeah, that is the worst thing you’ve ever said, [laughter] and you said it twice, which is the whole thing. So, what he has skilled And it’s so interesting that we just know all those things off the top of our heads.
; Neither of us looked at our notes that whole thing. Like, ; What else are we doing with our lives? Uh it’s just everything every lie Robert Pattinson has ever told is burnt into my brain. And he’s actually so clever, because you know the reason he does that on a press tour is that he is so strict about never talking about his personal life.
; Yeah. Because especially he got burnt so badly when Twilight really took off, it became this intense worldwide obsession. And especially cuz he was dating Kristen Stewart at the time, there was a particular spotlight on um their relationship and how they behave, and they were really hit with questions.
I mean, I don’t feel overly sorry for them, because, you know, they’re rich movie stars in a huge um blockbuster franchise. But, you know, I can I can It did take a turn for the worse. And then also, when those photos came out of Kristen Stewart um hooking up with her Snow White director. ; In the car.
And that was Yeah, oh my god, those those photos That is one of the few times you’re like, “Oh, no, literally no one knew that paparazzi was there.” Those photos are just crazy and such a vulnerable awful thing, and that got blasted. And then Kristen Stewart put out that, which is so unlike either of like Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart to put out such a public statement, where she was like, What did she say? “I’m I’m I’m so sorry.
” And then she’s like, “To Robert, I love you. I love you. I love you. I’m sorry.” As a public statement. ; It felt very like, this is an actual direct message to him, and he’s not answering your texts or something like that. So, you had to put it out as a statement. ; that really blew up. And I just remember paparazzi following them so intensely, but both of them, but particularly him, cuz everyone wanted that broken shot of him.
And when he did press tours later on, or he did red carpets, people would try and weave in questions, and like photographers would shout things from the street, not the professional photographers who are on the red carpet. I just There’s just such a difference between people who are on the red carpet, and people who are just following people through the streets.
Um shouting things about Kristen cheating on him to get a reaction out of him. And now I think that he’s just he He does strike me as someone who loves making movies, but doesn’t quite love all the fandom that comes with it. Whereas, some people like I think someone like Zendaya does also quite like the celebrity aspect of it.
Like, the dresses and the interviews and the events and things. And so, I think his what he’s really honed is this ability to do a press tour, say outrageous things, everyone laughs, he goes viral, he gets publicity for the movie, but no one’s asked him about his private life. No one’s asking him like that much about Suki Waterhouse.
We still don’t know his daughter’s name. We don’t know like even if they’re married or anything. Like, that he’s been able to sort of walk this line of being a superstar and keeping his private life to an extent. And it’s cuz he lies about edible pasta in your hand pasta burgers. And it yeah, and it feels like no one really asked that traditional sort of question anymore because they just know that he’s going to derail into a completely different direction.
And then you get a viral moment. So, it’s kind of great. It’s like a win for him and also a win for the journalist because at least you walk out with something that people are going to be interested in. ; He’s got a bit of that curated symbiotic relationship with them and that it works for both parties pretty well. So, with Zendaya, as we said, she also avoided any drama, didn’t talk about Tom Holland, but we thought this press run was going to be drama free, but right in at the end something’s come to to change things up. Well, there’s yeah, a few
little controversies bubbling up. Also, shout out to Tom Holland who, as we move on from the red carpet stuff, who was always, as he always is, never walks the red carpet with her if they’re not walking together, but if you look up, there he is in a balcony. He ; [laughter] ; always gets He always gets a hotel room balcony near where her red carpets are so he can watch from there.
And he was really He was waving to fans. He was wasn’t trying to hide that he was there, but I love that he’s always just in a hidden balcony somewhere whenever she’s doing a red carpet. ; He’s like her biggest fan. He left a little comment on one of her posts saying like, “She looks so beautiful.” I was one [laughter] of the fans and I’m like, “I love that you’re just her number one cheerleader without having to jump in and do joint interviews on the carpet or anything like that.
” Well, yeah, so he should be her biggest cheerleader. I think they’re they’re very cute together. Yes, there’s a few little controversies bubbling up around the film. One of them is to do with the subject matter of the film, which obviously we’re not going to spoil here, but it has leaked online in various places of what the big twist is cuz if you’re not across it, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in the movie play a couple who There’s a little meet-cute at the start and then it kind of like you see like shots of their relationship,
but it’s pretty much them. They’re engaged and their wedding is a few days away. movie pretty much takes place in the lead-up to the wedding. And this is in the trailer, so it’s not a spoiler, is that they’re with their friends at a pre-wedding like Well, they’re at a menu tasting, I can say as a tidbit from the movie, not that that changes anything.
They’re at a menu tasting for the wedding. They’re having lots of drinks. They’re with their two best friends who are also the groomsman and the maid of honor in their wedding. So, they’re married, the groomsman and maid of honor. They were saying before their wedding they told each other the worst thing they’d ever ever done.
And then they share it at the table and then they say to Zendaya and Robert’s characters, “Now you say your worst thing.” And Zendaya’s character, Emma, says hers and it just It was shocking. ; IT’S PRETTY BAD. ; [laughter] ; I WAS LIKE I WAS sitting in the cinema and I was like, “Oh.” I didn’t cuz I hadn’t looked up anything.
Like I went in completely blind. And I was a bit like it it is jarring. ; So, it wasn’t what you expected. ; No, it wasn’t what I was I don’t know what I was I To be honest, I Oh, no, I won’t even say anything just in case I give something away, but I was a bit I found it very jarring. And then it plays such a big part in the movie and it’s one of those things where like it’s really intense subject matter and it’s upsetting subject matter and I can definitely see how some people would watch this movie and be upset by it.
There’s a lot of laughter in the cinema, but it was also sometimes I think nervous laughter of like, “Are we allowed to laugh at this?” ; Well, I think as well people are going into this being like Robert Pattinson, Zendaya. I mean, it hasn’t been marketed as a rom-com. Like I think it is obvious it’s called the drama.
; that away from it because it’s them. ; and I think people are going to go into this like they did with Materialist, which actually was marketed more like a rom-com. They’ll be expecting this like, “Oh, feel-good Friday night movie with the girls.” and come out and be like little bit heavy.
Yeah, it is yeah, it is quite heavy and and funny and just offbeat. It’s a very dark dark emphasis on the dark, a very very dark comedy. ; It’s keeping me up nights, what this is. ; [laughter] ; You need to go It comes out this week. You’re going to ; to see it. The trauma is nearly over for you. ; Yeah, you need to go to directly to the cinema when it opens.
; I can’t access the internet until then. Like I’m going to I can’t spoil it for myself. ; spoil it for sure as soon as it comes out, which I hate, but So, that’s kind of happening now. People are starting to write think pieces about like, “Should they have made this movie? Is the subject matter too much?” Zendaya and Rob haven’t really because they can’t say anything about the movie.
When they did their Interview magazine cover shoot together, their joint interview, they were even saying in that like, “We have no idea what to say cuz we can’t say anything.” ; Yeah, that is difficult, isn’t it? ; now it’s coming circling back around of like, “Oh, you guys were walking down red carpets in pretty dresses talking like making jokes about weddings and making jokes about couples and the movie’s about this.
” But what can you do? Cuz you don’t want to spoil it for people. So, you don’t really have a choice. And now some real life very dark drama has come out to accompany it because this essay that was written by the filmmaker, Christopher Børgli, has come out that he wrote when he was for this Norwegian magazine and that’s been circulating that he wrote about his romantic relationship with a high school girl who was years younger than him.
So, at the time she was and he was . And now people are reading that, which has come out. They’ve almost had this clean press run and right before the movie officially premieres everywhere, this is what people are starting to talk about. ; Yeah, this is really blown up cuz I believe it was obviously yeah, it was run many years ago, but I believe it’s been translated and then reprinted by the Hollywood Reporter and it’s just blowing up.
And look, it’s fairly questionable and and gross. And now obviously because the movie itself has some like difficult subject matter and now people are saying, “Well, how could Robert and Zendaya work with this man when he’s written this essay?” I mean, it always comes back to the celebrities who I guess their names are on the movie, but I’m like there’s a lot to unpack here that’s nothing to do with Zendaya in particular.
Like people love to pull her name into into things and I’m she has nothing to do with this essay that he wrote. But yes, in this essay he talks about his May-December romance. And look, years years is not the biggest deal-breaker, I think. ; It’s the fact she was . ; Yeah, exactly. I don’t think years is the biggest deal-breaker when someone’s and someone’s cuz then like you’re both completely adults and I wouldn’t really bat an eye at that, but someone being like a ; school student, a child with a -year-old who’s like a fully an adult
with a fully formed frontal lobe and out in the world. But it’s it’s that’s bad, but then also just the way he writes about it like their May-December romance and he said he had to like recalibrate his moral compass. And also that he said And this is He kind of said he watched a lot of movies that made him feel like it was okay. Like Lost in Translation.
I was like, “Dude, you took the wrong message from Lost in Translation. They don’t have a relationship in that.” ; Also, she is older and she’s married. She’s not in Lost in Translation. ; a fully formed adult. I mean, she’s early s, but still she’s not a high school student. I was like, “Don’t bring Sofia Coppola into this.
She didn’t She didn’t tell you to do this.” And the way he talks about So, there’s one part where he goes, “If a film from featuring Woody Allen’s character, a -year-old man involved with a -year-old girl, is presented solely in a favorable light and sparked no controversy at the time, why should my relationship with a much smaller age gap be considered inappropriate in ?” Okay, by we were already off the Woody Allen bandwagon.
Or like we should should have been. So, again, you weren’t. Yeah, exactly. Throwing a Woody Allen movie into the mix as a defense is wild because that’s been a criticism of Woody Allen movies that they often depict an older man having a relationship with a much younger like an ingenue woman who comes in like changes his life and that’s something that he’s been called out for.
Also, Woody Allen like never found guilty, but accused of some pretty terrible things to do with young girls in particular, the daughter of the woman he was in a relationship with, Mia Farrow’s daughter who there’s been allegations around like sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. And it’s not that he was found innocent, it’s just that there wasn’t enough information to go to court, which is a completely different thing.
And then he has also been married to Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter and who was a child at the time as well. He’s not exactly the model. I mean, [laughter] I guess for this guy he actually would be the model because he’s like, “Yeah, that’s my That’s how I want to live my life.” I know and he goes, “I opted to heed Woody’s perspective over my friends.
” So, he’s talking to his friends and they’re like, “I don’t know about this man.” His friends were like, “Dude, don’t date a -year-old.” ; She’s in high school. So creepy and weird and he was like, “Well, Woody Allen told me it’s okay.” which is the worst defense you can have. And there’s even parts in the essay where he said like, “Oh, I had to climb out of her bedroom window cuz her parents came home early.
” And I was like, “Well, obviously that that’s inappropriate and there’s a power imbalance if her family are like, ‘Don’t come over and hang out with her. Don’t date our teenage daughter, nearly -year-old man.'” Well, I’m also wondering what inspired him to write this article. ; Well, he was he was defending his May-December romance.
I’m just not sure that it landed the way he I mean, I know at the time probably This is really his first mainstream project, isn’t it? ; Yeah, yeah, this is his first big He’s Yeah, I think his other movies have been more kind of indie arthouse. And that’s the interesting thing about this is like when I went to the screening, everyone’s like, “Oh, they’re not doing a big Australian premiere.
” And I was like, “I know it looks like this is a big blockbuster release because they’ve done some like they’ve done some big red carpets and because it’s Zendaya and Rob Pattinson.” And it is a A film, so it’s not tiny, but it’s not meant to be a big blockbuster. Um And so I think yeah, he is more of like an under the radar indie director who has made some interesting movies and then got these two big superstars to be in his movie because, you know, it isn’t obviously it’s very buzzy, interesting and like I can see why Robert and Zendaya said yes
to it because there’s it’s basically a two-hander between their characters and it’s just them like in rooms together acting and having these It’s like watching a play, to be honest. So, like I can see why they wanted to do it because it’s a real showpiece for their acting. I don’t think anyone expected this essay to resurface right now and and sort of take on the life that it has against him.
I don’t think it’ll affect ticket sales. No, I everyone I know wants to see this movie. ; Exactly. I think the marketing has been the allure of this movie and like the talkability has been too strong. It’s just so timely with it coming out because as you were saying before, like they’ve had such a good press run and there’s all the interviews they’ve done together have been so like Robert and Zendaya have been so well received and there’s been her looks on the red carpet and then his crazy lies that he’s telling and it’s all been so positive
and now attaching like creepiness to the director and having the story blow up is also getting a lot of traffic for websites. I mean, let me To be so clear, I think this guy sounds like an absolute creep. And I know it happened a long time ago, but everything about this essay just made me I was like, “So, I like your filmmaking, but you as a human being Unsure.
Well, no, I’m not unsure. I do I just think he’s a bit creepy and it’s such a typical thing of men to be like, “It’s my right to date this much younger woman.” He’s like, “We just We were equals.” That’s what he says in the essay. He’s like, we actually were equals and and it’s just no. ; You just weren’t. ; He’s probably texting Robin like, can you come up with a really good lie? ; Yeah. I need to divert this.
Like, just come up with something crazy. ; The only thing I don’t really agree with is um people kind of as I said before, attaching Zendaya’s name to it and being like, Zendaya’s director, the man working with Zendaya has done this. It’s like ; known this anyway. Like, this is something that’s resurfaced from so long ago.
It’s unlikely they they even knew about it. ; just think it makes it more of a clicky story to bring And to be fair, like Zendaya uh The Hollywood Reporter didn’t sell it like that. It’s all the outlets that are now covering it are bringing her name into it to make it more of a a story. Yeah, so it’s an unfortunate taint on an otherwise pretty clean press run.
; Yeah, yeah. So, we’re in the last week of this. One more premiere to go and I can’t wait for you to see it, actually. I know. Get in on the first night, guys. We can’t wait to hear what you [laughter] think. ; We’ll We’ll talk more about the actual movie um closer to the day, but um yeah, I will just say just cuz I don’t want anyone to be like, Laura told me to go see this movie and it upset me.
So, it just I will just Yeah, it’s it’s um it’s some parts of it are quite upsetting. That’s all I’ll say on that.
